I attended a geochemistry class and the instructors (leading experts in the US) presented their eagle ford and buda analysis along with others. It was based on oil and rock analysis. Needless to say, I was surprised and asked many questions.

I am amazed with the recent advances in oil/rock chemistry - the source rock and migration can be derived. The hot spots can be determined by thermal maturity, total organic material, C isotope, etc. All this correlates well with oil production.
