Flashback: That Time George W. Bush Said ‘God Told Me’ to Attack Iraq

In light of the current horrors unfolding in Iraq, it’s imperative that we remember just how we came to this point. One major reason seems to be a voice that is only heard in George W. Bush’s head.

A 2005 story in The Guardian pulls back the curtain and reveals the sniveling little man behind Bush’s Great and Powerful OZ persona: God. The story quotes Nabil Shaath, the Palestinian Foreign Minister at the time, detailing a meeting with Bush at a Israeli-Palestinian summit in Egypt after the start of the Iraq invasion:

“President Bush said to all of us: ‘I am driven with a mission from God’. God would tell me, ‘George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan’. And I did. And then God would tell me ‘George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq’. And I did.”

Mr. Bush went on: “And now, again, I feel God’s words coming to me, ‘Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East’. And, by God, I’m gonna do it.”

According to Nabil Shaath’s Wikipedia page, Shaath later tried to soften his take on Bush’s comments, and both the White House and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas denied that Bush ever uttered them.

However, The Guardian story reports that a Palestinian transcript of the meeting containing a version of Bush’s remarks was published in Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

Given George W.’s religious fervor, there can be little doubt that he said these things. The only question remaining then, is whether Bush’s god is a poor prognosticator.

Or whether Bush is merely schizophrenic.
