John Chambers, Cisco's CEO, responds to new NSA allegations (emphasis added):

2014-May-15

This week we have seen allegations that the U.S. National Security Agency intercepted IT equipment in transit from manufacturers to customers. Some of these reports included a photograph purportedly showing a Cisco product being modified.

These allegations can undermine confidence in our entire industry, especially the worldwide supply chain, and affect the ability of technology companies to deliver products globally. As a result, I have spoken and corresponded with the most senior levels of the U.S. government to express our deep concern.

I reinforced that our customers trust us to deliver to their doorsteps products that meet the highest standards of integrity and security. Although we understand the real and significant threats that exist in this world, there must also be respect for the industry's relationship with our customers.

This is a critical conversation for the industry to have with customers and governments around the world.

When you are asked about Cisco's position, please respond that as a matter of policy and practice, we have not and do not work with any government, including the U.S. government, to weaken our products. This has been true since our inception. Related resources and contacts can be found on the Product & Cyber Integrity community.

We have confidence in the open, global Internet, and the enormous economic benefits that it has brought to billions of people around the world. By working together, we can realize the promise of the next Internet.

John
