A water sample from the Maumee River at Waterville, Ohio, is a snapshot of the river’s chemical composition at a single moment in time. Researchers say every sample counts. “Every storm is different, so you can learn something new from virtually every one,” says David Baker, the founder of Heidelberg University’s National Center for Water Quality Research. “We have lots of examples where had we not studied that particular storm, we would have lost extremely useful information on understanding the processes involved in nonpoint source pollution.” Photo © Matt Strazzante / Circle of Blue.
