Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., essentially is tied with his likely Democratic opponent, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, according to the latest New York Times/Kaiser Family Foundation poll.
McConnell holds a 44-43 percent advantage over Grimes among Kentucky registered voters, the survey found.
A February Bluegrass Poll, conducted by Survey USA for The Courier-Journal and three other news organizations, found Grimes leading McConnell 46-42 percent.
One reason the race is close: five-term veteran McConnell has the approval of only 40 percent of voters, while 52 percent disapprove of him, the New York Times/Kaiser poll said.
