Doctors are currently writing prescriptions. People with prescription/card in hand are walking in the door to buy their medicine at this moment.

I don't want to be controversial, but I think recreational will ultimately be the big money maker IN TIME. But right now so few States have approved recreational, while so many have approved medical.

Regardless of the ultimate reason for you requiring it, if a doctor prescribes medical marijuana you can buy the product from a licensed dispensary in some States.
