First-2014-trip-out-SUCCESS-pics-but-with-a-story...

Well, we finally had a warm weekend and my wife and I were itching to finally go to the "honey hole" down near the dam, and give it a try at Lake Oconee, GA... Everything went to plan, we got there right after day, set out the lights around the boat, and waited for the bait fish to come in... What? No shad? After an hour, I threw the cast net, only caught 1 shad... Not good, the fish will be with the shad... Let's move up the the lake then.

We go to another "hot spot" about 3 miles up the lake... Same... no bait fish... nothing... We move back into a cove... no bait..

I tell my wife the fish probably are 10 miles up the lake on a spawing run, probably at the Hwy 44 bridge choke point, but it's already after midnight, it's 50 degrees, and we are both a little cold after midnight and NO FISH in the boat.. I suggested we call it a night and go home... She says.. well, we are already here, if you believe the fish are at the bridge... let's go see.

Oh boy, I'll never hear the end of this if the fish are not there, I think, as we start the cold 30 minute ride up the lake..

As we approached the 44 Hwy Bridge, I see some bright lights under the bridge, several boats are already set up and fishing hard... Good sign, at 1 a.m. in the morning. So we go to the other side of the bridge, tie up to the bridge, and put out the lights again... Almost immediately I see bait SHAD in the water!

Oh yea, I tell my wife... The fish will be here... I throw the cast net after about 10 minutes, get about 40 shad, and we bait up the lines and wait... After about 15 minutes, one of my lines moves out, but not like a white bass or hybrid would run, so I set the hook and reel... In the boat comes a SLAB CRAPPIE! Oh my, says I, are the crappie here? So I down size hooks, put on a float, and send a bait out about 5 feet down under a float... bam, another crappie... rebait, BAM, another crappie... My wife says, when do I get to fish, lol? I hand here the rod, and rig up another crappie rig... Needless to say, 29 fish by dawn... We want to go back tonight, but probably too cold and windy... Here's the rest of the story..

And yes, that is the crappie roe fried up at the top of the plate!
Fresh water caviar it is!
