Elasticity of demand is what comes to mind when I think of oil companies. Everyone will ALWAYS need oil is their thought process IMO. They've begun taking baby steps but they've yet to start really pouring resources into alternative fuels.
Sure they have advertisements letting us know that "they care" but boy when they actually start pouring some money into alternatives we'll know they are. DME is the starting point I think. You bring up some great points on the positive image that they'll gain too from investing into DME. It's a no brainer :)
