Dom Cooks mourned after losing brain cancer battle

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Family and friends are mourning the passing of standout student-athlete Dom Cooks of Decatur High School. The Federal Way teen touched a lot of hearts in his battle with brain cancer.

"Just know that Dom don't want us to cry," said his twin, Diamond. "Dom's in a better place now. He's not suffering no more."

Which Dom do you remember most? The student who got to graduate high school early a few weeks ago? The top athlete who got to score a final touchdown at the end of the season? Or the young man who always had a smile despite his battle with brain cancer?

You can't help but remember them all because in his later stages Dom was larger than life. Dom in February told us, "Y'all shouldn't feel sorry for me. Because God's got me. Easy."

His life slipped away Tuesday night with family by his side.

"Pretty much I just heard him stop breathing," said Diamond. "And that was it."

"I was telling him that I love him and that he was one of my heroes, my fighters, my soldiers," continued Diamond. "He never gave up. He always kept on fighting."

Students and faculty at Decatur paused Thursday to remember Dom and the impact he made.

"He said 'my purpose is to teach and inspire people.' I said 'what are you supposed to teach them?' and he said "I'm supposed to teach them that tomorrow is not a promise and to embrace every day.' And he has done that," said Decatur principal David Browers.

SAT testing was cancelled for the day to give students a chance to grieve and sign posters in Dom's memory. An evening candlelight vigil is planned for front of the high school.

Dom was entered in a nationwide "most inspirational student athlete" competition and finished third.
