Art's dialog on LinkedIn...
...I trust that Art won't mind me relaying this, as it is already in the public domain.
LinkedIn thread started with Art posting this article: http://www.rdmag.com/news/2014/04/shiny-quantum-dots-brighten-future-solar-cells
A question followed: "Hello Art; Interesting...So, do you have a ball-park estimate of what the manufacturing cost of these Q-dot devices attached to and integrated with solar cells would be? And their lifetime? LdC
Arts' answer: "Hi Joe, thanks for your comment. We have our projections for cost and output but I cannot disclose them. Speaking in general, we estimate CAPEX at one-tenth to one-fifth of a comparable sized silicon plant. Production variables include QE, production line speed estimated to start at 100meters/minute, and number of work shifts. We believe we will scale automated quantum dot production per day to be able to support a solar plant of 1Gw in size.
Regarding lifetime, Thick Shell are photostable so we expect more than adequate lifetimes.
Estimate? I foresee the increasing efficiency of Quantum Dots (Nozik posits 65% theoretical efficiency possible) lowering cost sufficiently that replacement becomes more economical than keeping the old solar cells. Thats just my opinion.
Our Chief Science Officer is Dr. Ghassan Jabbour who started KAUST Alternative Energy Department and ASU Flexible Display Center.
BTW, we are seeking JV partners for pilot projects."
