Is it really that DOA as Ashraf predicted or is it just late as all mobile stuff from Intel? This stinks.

To add some further color to this discussion, I remind us all of the following from the Q1 2013 call:

In the phone segment, we had a good first quarter in our baseband business. We are shipping LTE versions today, and are on track to ship multimode voice and data LTE baseband solutions by the end of this year. We are winning designs with our new Clover Trail+ apps processor, where customers and third parties are highlighting both the performance and power efficiency of our architecture and are on track to ship our next-generation product, code named Merrifield, by the end of this year

After this call, Merrifield was never mentioned on an Intel earnings call. At Investor Meeting 2013, Intel did not talk about how many phones it planned to ship in 2014, just tablets. And, of course, it's been 2 months since the Merrifield platform "launched" and the only design we have seen is an FFRD.

Note also that Intel plans a dual core Silvermont SoC with very high integration (SoFIA 3G) in Q4 2014 and a quad Silvermont (SoFIA LTE) in Q1 2015. Note also that Intel felt the need to get these to market quickly enough that TSMC was employed to build the chip.

Also note that instead of pushing Merrifield into low cost Android tablets, Intel is pushing Bay Trail across the stack.

I think from these facts one can draw a reasonable conclusion as to how much traction Merrifield will get.
