You missing the point on that play. It's bad for both teams.

The runner has no idea what to do.
Do I go back to first?
Do I try go to second and hope that AFTER he caught the ball the ump will call him safe at first cause he bobbled the ball.

There is NO WAY to ever know for sure who is going to interpret what without a replay then you got an argument going on about where the runner would have been.
