I believe the volume so far is rather decent. As you mentioned, we made the NYMX losers list and that would alert some of the smart money. Add in the momo traders (via alerts) who are walking on XXII like a welcome mat and it could be enough to overwhelm the MMs who have been shorting XXII and pushed them to cover shares.

The Nasdaq biotech index is moving in a similar fashion today. I saw quite a few biotechs rise rapidly later in afternoon.
