There is no doubt that the lure of money is a strong motivator in much of life. A previous poster was correct when they stated that Freddie approached Star regarding promotion of the product. As I remember the first announcement, they said that he wanted to come on board because of what it had done in helping him continue on in his career. I also remember them saying something at first that he would receive no compensation for this. It was later that stocks were offered to him.
In my opinion, anyone who would approach a company to ask to promote their product just because they need (or think they need) the money, regardless if they like the product is a scumbag. It may even happen from time to time but that is not the normal method of operation in the advertising business. I don't place much value on who is advertising a product unless there has been some authenticated benefit they have seen from using the product (ex. I don't care if an athlete drives a certain model of car or not, I'll buy the car if it suits my needs, price range etc.).
As far as Freddie wearing the logo on one sleeve or the other, so what? I imagine that his other sponsors have paid good money (and perhaps more??) and it wouldn't surprise me if they even insist in the contract where their logo goes.
