iPhone App Store surpasses 500 million downloads

Apple's App Store, the online marketplace for iPhone and iPod Touch applications, has exceeded 500 million downloads. It seems that the holidays have played a large part in reaching the milestone. In the past 42 days alone, 200 million applications were downloaded. An announcement in September pegged application downloads at 100 million.
App Store launched in July 2008, and after six months of existence, it has surpassed the rate at which it took iTunes Music Store to reach the same milestone. iTunes Music Store reached 500 million downloads after two years. Currently, over 15,000 free and paid applications are available in the App Store. [via EngadgetMobile]
