Gasoline Prices Hiked Up To 50 Percent In Egypt
5/5/2008 2:47:47 PM The consumers in Egypt had to pay a heavy price for the government's decision to hike salary for government employees, as Egypt's parliament has endorsed a government-proposed emergency bill to raise fuel prices and duties on cigarettes and cars.
The government introduced the new measures to raise 19 billion Egyptian pounds, or about 3.6 billion US dollars, needed for a 30 percent paycheck increase announced by President Hosni Mubarak last week.
The new bill proposed to increase the price of different types of gasoline by up to 50 percent. The price of diesel, which is consumed by most public transport, will increase by 46 percent, as will heating oil. Natural gas will go up by 58 percent while cigarettes will cost dearer by 10 percent.
The parliament approved the new bill with 297 members voting in favor of it in the 454-seat assembly.
