TICK / TRIN Indicators

It appears that there aren't many traders who make use of these indicators despite its usefulness. TICK and TRIN are two helpful indicators meant to measure the general sentiment of the overall stock market. These indicators are used to gauge the immediate market movement and get a sense of where it's headed to in near-term.

TICK indicators.

NYSE, NASDAQ or AMEX all have the TICK indicators. TICK indicators for NYSE is determined to be the difference between the total up ticks and the total down ticks for all stocks in the exchange.

For example, suppose there were 500 stocks that had an uptick in their last trade and there were 200 stocks that had a downtick. In this case the TICK indicator would should 300 value.

TRIN indicator
TRIN is a function of issues and volumes using a simple formula.
((Total advancing issues/total declining issues) divided by (total advancing volume/ total declining volume)).

This indicator hints at a contrarian view where its purpose is to signal overbought/oversold zones in the market.

How do we daytrade using these indicators?

NEUTRAL SENTIMENT: TICK value between +200 and -300

BULLISH TICK: higher than +200
BEARISH TICK: lower than -300

Very bullish TICK: higher than +500
Very bearish TICK: lower than -500

Strong Sign of Reversal: TICK higher than +1000 or lower than -1000

Bearish TRIN: Generally Rising or value higher than 1.
Bullish TRIN: Generally Falling or value below 0.9
