Tremendous revenue opportunity in DIC World-wide, vice only USA/EU... assuming @ 1 of 3 cases of severe sepsis involves DIC (which is also Dr. Cox's interpolation):

CONCLUSIONS: Severe sepsis is a common, expensive, and frequently fatal condition, with as many deaths annually as those from acute myocardial infarction. It is especially common in the elderly and is likely to increase substantially as the U.S. population ages.

Sepsis, or more specifically severe sepsis (defined as sepsis with organ dysfunction), is a relatively common condition with a major impact on healthcare resources and expenditure. The incidence in the European Union has been estimated at 90.4 cases per 100,000 population, as opposed to 58/100,000 for breast cancer 1. In other words, an individual is around 60% more likely to develop severe sepsis in a lifetime than they are to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

The documented incidence of sepsis worldwide is 1.8 million cases annually, but this figure is produced on the back of low rates of recognition and diagnosis and a tendency to record the causative pathology (e.g, pneumonia) rather than the systemic condition. Recent estimates give an incidence of 3 in 1000, so the true number of cases may be 10 times this. In 1992, it was estimated that 1,400 people worldwide were dying each day from severe sepsis 4. The incidence of the condition has, however, risen three fold over the last 20 years. In most developed countries, an older population with greater co-morbidity is being treated with increasingly complex and invasive techniques. Antibiotics with broader spectrum of activity have been in use for longer against a battery of organisms with increasing and multiple resistance profiles. The true figure today is likely to be much higher.
