Governor tours ethanol plant
By: Nneka Nwosu

Eliot Spitzer

VOLNEY, N.Y. -- Governor Eliot Spitzer has an affinity for construction sites. He says the sounds of people hard at work are reminders of both investment and growth.

"We are going to generate jobs and an economy that will thrive once again," said Spitzer.

Visiting this site years ago would not have elicited the same feeling. The vacant Miller Brewing plant occupied the grounds and stood as a constant reminder of opportunity lost. But today, it is the site of Northeast Biofuels, the sixth ethanol plant in the country with an expected annual output of more than 100 million gallons of ethanol.

Doug Mackenzie, president of Permolex International, one of the companies investing in the plant, said, "So it could be a third of the ethanol consumption in Upstate New York which is pretty sizeable. So 100 million or 114 million is one of the bigger plants in the U.S."

Just a few months ago, many of the structures on the site did not exist. And if construction continues on schedule, the plant could be up and running by the end of the year. And the governor says he's optimistic about its potential."

"We will have an ethanol facility that will generate the energy we need to drive our economy. Energy we need to break our dependence on foreign fuels," said Spitzer.

The governor says he plans to revisit the plant when he can enjoy the sound of ethanol in production.
