GS Agrifuels developing New York biodiesel plant
by Dave Nilles

A New York biodiesel project has doubled in size. GS Agrifuels Corporation announced today the formation of GS Fulton Biodiesel LLC, a 10 MMgy biodiesel plant to be built at the Riverview Business Park in Fulton, N.Y.

The project was initially a 5 MMgy project being designed by NextGen Fuel Inc. In 2005, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority awarded NextGen a $250,000 contract to design and build a facility in Fulton, N.Y.

GS Agrifuels said it has executed an agreement with a subsidiary of Homeland Energy Biofuels LLC to form the venture. Homeland Energy, the lead developer in the project, has managed the feedstock, off-take and other technical and business aspects of the project over the past year and had selected NextGen Fuel Inc.'s biodiesel production equipment as the production technology for the project, according to a release. The biodiesel system is being fabricated by Warnecke Design Inc., added the release.

GS Agrifuels announced Nov. 2, 2006, that it had acquired NextGen Fuel. NextGen Fuel’s Jeff Deweese recently told Biodiesel Magazine that the Fulton project could begin production as soon as April 2007. GS AgriFuels President and CEO Thomas Scozzafava said the plant is expected to begin production by mid-2007.

The biodiesel plant will be built adjacent to Northeast Biofuels LLC, which is developing a 110 MMgy ethanol plant at the former Miller Brewing Company plant. Both projects will utilize existing brewery infrastructure. Northeast Biofuels is expected to start production later this year. Permolex International LP, which already operates an ethanol plant in western Canada, is the project’s lead equity investor.

Eric Will, co-developer of the Riverview Business Park, said a second biodiesel project has inquired about developing a project at the site. GS Agrifuels, under its Mean Green Biofuels brand, is also developing a 30 MMgy biodiesel project in Memphis, Tenn.

Homeland Energy is also developing additional biodiesel plants in New York and New Jersey, according to its Web site. The company managed the development of New York’s first hydrogen fueling station and is involved with the second, which is expected to open in 2007, according to the release.
