Hacketts will sell Kawasaki.
From: Watertown Daily Times (Watertown, NY) Date: June 3, 2006
Byline: David Winters
Jun. 3--OGDENSBURG -- The revving of motorcycle engines will soon be emanating from the former NAPA Auto Parts building at Fine and State streets.
Hacketts Department Store is broadening its business to include motor sports with the opening of a Kawasaki dealership. The store, at 1301 State St., is tentatively scheduled to open June 16 and will feature a large selection of motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles and personal watercraft.
"The north country has a large volume of ATV sales that happen in this area," said Rich J. Finnerty, Hacketts general manager.
The store will also have a repair shop, with Hacketts moving its rental equipment business over to the building. The 28,000-square-foot building will be used largely as a warehouse, but a 7,000-square-foot space is dedicated to the dealership and rental equipment store.
"We are always searching for new opportunities," Paul Hackett said. "We had some interest in motor sports, and we got a call from them."
The store will have nine employees for the Kawasaki dealership and equipment rental. Mr. Finnerty said he's excited about the store opening because he has an attachment for motorcycles.
"I have ridden motorcycles for most of my life," said Mr. Finnerty, who will oversee the store. "I would call myself a motorcycle enthusiast. I love to ride them."
Hacketts is finalizing a store name and its hours. The store will also offer motorcycle equipment and clothing, including helmets and jackets.
Hacketts has also expressed interest recently in locating a store in Watertown. The company, which dates back to 1830, has stores in Ogdensburg, Canton, Massena and Potsdam. The Watertown location would be its first outside St. Lawrence County.
A mainstay in Ogdensburg, Hacketts sells high-end clothing brands, crafts, decorations, kitchenware and other household items and some hardware.
