Discount Store's Opening in Potsdam, N.Y., to Benefit Kiwanis Club.

Apr. 15--POTSDAM, N.Y. -- A Canadian- based discount store's Saturday splash will ripple through the community when it teams with the Kiwanis Club to promote its grand opening.

Giant Tiger Family Discount Store will open in a 21,000-square-foot space next to Hacketts Department Store at 8 a.m. in the former Ames Plaza on outer Market Street. The two stores joined Kiwanis to host a fund-raiser during the grand opening.

"I think it's great what they are doing for us," said Carla J. Ingram, Kiwanis president.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will start at 7:40 a.m. The Kiwanis will sell hot dogs and drinks, give away balloons and offer face painting.

The stores bought the food and drinks and all profits will go to Kiwanis.

The Giant Tiger mascot will be on hand, clowns will make balloon animals and Hacketts will host paint, tool and cooking demonstrations and a fashion show.

"I think it'll be a great opportunity. Certainly we expect a good crowd," said Norman V. Garrelts, Hacketts president and chief executive officer.

Giant Tiger and Hacketts teamed to offer high-end merchandise and discounted clothing and food. Hacketts opened in November and Giant Tiger will occupy some of the Ogdensburg-based store's space. Hacketts will manage both stores and eventually take over the Giant Tiger franchise.

"When we started this, there was a lot of head scratching, "Now how are we going to do this?'" Mr. Garrelts said. "We're very excited. It's been a long time coming."

Hacketts will have an "opening" Saturday too. The store will unveil its True Value line. The Ogdensburg Hacketts is a True Value store. The store will offer popular True Value promotions and products, including paint.

"Our relationship with True Value has been a great one. It's exciting for us," Mr. Garrelts said.

Giant Tiger will employ 40 full- and part-time workers.

"We've always had Canadian companies -- such as Monkey Joe's and Dixie Lee Chicken -- we're just kind of extending our family in Canada," said Abigail D. Lee, executive director of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce.
