The next question to ask is 'Do they care?'.

It is an unfortunate side-effect of the enormous size of our society (Dunbar's number for the ideal social group is 150 individuals maximum) that the average man begins to feel overwhelmed by the sheer numbers, like his voice is one among so many that it does not count for anything, and thus he loses interest in trying to have his voice heard. The other contributing factor is that our government has, by default, taken over many functions better handled by the individual citizen (who, by reneging on his responsibility which the government then assumes, also cedes a bit of his precious freedom), and thus creates a society of entitlement, whereby the individual has no responsibility to make decisions or take care of himself. This does not create an individual who cares what is happening in Burma. . .
