Let me begin the process of enlightening you about the technical aspects. I am a professional software coder myself and I've been both a developer and the MIS director of a regional tax firm with offices in both Dallas and Houston. I've been in the coding business since 1980 and I am not your typical oldie who has let his skillset lapse.
If you are a software developer like you say, then you can do like me and access the MSDN resources. For the benefit of simplification, here is the starting point for everybody, yourself included:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa730921.aspx
The title of this little jewel is very telling:
"Improving Performance in Excel 2007",
and in it, we find the following summary question:
"Why Is Calculation Speed Important?
Poor calculation speed affects productivity and increases user errors. Studies have shown that a user's productivity and ability to focus on a task deteriorate as response time lengthens."
It is not an accident, everybody, that the visual metaphor Spooz repeatedly employs in their expensive, first class trade journal advertising campaign is SPEED.
They have asked and answered Microsoft's own question as to why calculation speed is important. Microsoft answered it too, by the way, but their answer to this day is that users have to compromise. To see their recommendations (compromise), consider the following this MSDN article. And I quote:
"Excel has two main calculation modes, which let you control when calculation occurs:
Automatic calculation Formulas are automatically recalculated whenever you make a change.
Manual calculation Formulas are only recalculated when you request it (for example, by pressing F9)."
A mere three sentences further down in the article, here is the guts of why SpoozToolz is earth shaking in terms of the horizons it opens up. Again I quote, and everybody.... PAY ATTENTION and THINK!!
"As calculation time increases, users must switch to manual calculation when entering data."
Let me put that in all caps for emphasis:
"AS CALCULATION TIME INCREASES, USERS MUST SWITCH TO MANUAL CALCULATION WHEN ENTERING DATA."
That is Microsoft's recommended work-around to the inadequacies of their own product.
Now, no_shorts_here, your conclusion that what Spooz has done is create a DLL Excel plug-in in C++ or C# is not even close to the right conclusion.
They did not create a plug-in to Excel because they were so smart that they fully understood that if they were to have created a plug-in to Excel, they would have never been free of the built in speed inadequacies of Excel.
SpoozToolz handles REAL TIME data. As Microsoft in this article plainly admits, they created RealTimeData functionality (the RTD function) but their RTD function will not actually handle the volume load required for actually employing Excel to handle real time data feeds.
Under actual real time data feed loads, Excel is brought to its knees almost immediately and it forces users, as Microsoft plainly states, to "SWITCH TO MANUAL CALCULATION". I don't want to be too caustic here, but obviously, at the instant the user has to switch to manual calculation mode, they are out of real time mode.
Spooz offloaded the responsibility for calculation into a middleware piece that is a SERVER in and of itself. It SERVES up data at up to 10 million calculations a second to a user's desktop spreadsheet.
This middleware piece is proprietary. It sits between the FIX data feed and the user's desktop application. And, it was created OPEN SOURCE. As such, it is not limited to Excel. It can deliver data that is the calculation results into non-Microsoft spreadsheets.
In the demo on their website, Spooz refers to their topology by saying that the Excel spreadsheet serves as a "blotter". I'm a published author and a tad vain about being a wordsmith, so grant me a bit of personal vanity because I think I've a better way of describing this. Everybody, if you don't get the mental picture of a blotter, try the following (my vanity LOL):
Excel becomes a catcher's mitt with the SpoozToolz middleware delivering fastballs at a rate of up to 10 million a second.
I know. Rip me a new one. I'm laughably vain, but I personally think that is much clearer.
By the way, if folks have not done so, go to the web site and view the demo. Here's the link:

I'm a professional day trader so I have to go trade. All of the people whose specialty seems to be to find fault need to do one thing, IMHO. You need to learn to chart in candlesticks. SPZI has a chart that is as clear as a bell. If you have this all too common predilection to find fault, you will cure your infection in the case of SPZI by actually learning to understand how price and volume work to tell you what a particular stock pattern is saying is happening.
As the Microsoft page I have pointed everybody to makes clear, however, the key differentiator that makes SpoozToolz such a breathtaking piece of trading software and which ought to drive professional traders out of their current trading platforms and into SpoozToolz in droves is the power that true RTD functionality will give them.
Microsoft asked the question: "Why Is Calculation Speed Important?" and they answered that users have to compromise. SpoozToolz is a historic and revolutionary solution for Everyman (not just power users and high tech trading types) because they answered that very same question by saying: "No you don't have to compromise. Everyman can have it all. Affordably. Today."
Hopes this helps
