Government is suppressing the truth
by Ellen Taylor, Petrolia, California 10/20/2006

Five years have passed since Sept. 11. To many cancer patients, the
interval of five years is an important milestone. If they have survived
without relapse for that long, they breathe a sigh of relief.

Napoleon Bonaparte is supposed to have said, "You don’t have to
suppress
the truth forever, just until it doesn’t matter anymore." The official
story of what happened on 9/11 has survived for five years. All the
pomp
and circumstance of a state memorial was recently celebrated on the
ugly
scar where the towers once stood. Amid the dire urgency of current
events, the confusing and contradictory facts of that catastrophe have
been buried under its consequences. The official version may make it
into the history books--American history books, that is.

It is disbelieved abroad. And, a Zogby poll found that half of New
Yorkers think 9/11 was an inside job. In Los Angeles, a citizens’ grand
jury returned findings which read that "the official account of events
of Sept. 11, 2001, is physically impossible, untenable, contradictory,
fraudulent and ignores vast bodies of relevant and pertinent evidence."

"It must therefore be rejected as a propaganda fabrication designed to
favor the unleashing of aggressive war, while hiding the activity of a
treasonous cabal of high-level elected and appointed civilian U.S.
government and military officials, and private and/or contracted third
parties and rogue agents under their known or unknown direction yet to
be determined, who both actively prepared, promoted, organized,
assisted, fomented and/or passively favored the Sept. 11 attacks and
supported the cover-up that followed."

It is not difficult to understand this stoutly expressed incredulity.
The official story, which leapt fully formed into the media before the
smoke had cleared, is counterintuitive. That 19 young men, with poor
English and terrible flying skills, could overpower pilots, evade FAA
radar and, performing sophisticated aerial maneuvers, take out the
World
Trade Center and the most heavily defended structure on the planet,
guided by a man in a cave 13,000 miles away, is the most farfetched
conspiracy theory one could imagine.

Other enigmas beset the most docile believer:

+ Osama bin Laden denied responsibility for the crime five days later,
in his last genuine appearance.

+ No Arab names are recorded on the passenger lists of the flights.

+ War games, a hijacking scenario, sent most of the Air Force, which
until that date had a record of prompt interceptions, over Canada that
very day.

+ No steel building has ever been brought down by fire, and the
collapse
of the twin towers had multiple features that suggested controlled
demolition.

+ There is the inexplicable collapse of the 47-story WTC Building 7,
which had not been hit, and which its lessor, Larry Silverstein,
confessed to having ordered "pulled."

+ The evidence was hastily removed.

+ And on and on.

Nettling conflicts of interest also riddle the tale.

+ The WTC was a "white elephant" in need of asbestos removal.

+ Developers and financiers, such as David Rockefeller, Peter Peterson
and Larry Silverstein, profited billions from its demolition, both from
insurance and ensuing wars.

+ President Bush’s brother Marvin was a principal in Securacom, the
company which provided security for the WTC, United Airlines and Dulles
Airport.

+ The government flew scores of Bin Ladens out of the country three
days
after the catastrophe.

+ The oil and armaments industries, to which the Bushes and Cheney owe
their fortunes, have made astronomical profits since they began the
wars.

+ And on and on.

Catastrophic government cover-ups
by Ellen Taylor, Petrolia, 10/21/2006

More ominous is the utter contempt for public opinion that
characterized
the government’s refusal to permit investigation of Sept. 11. Vice
President Cheney blocked the House-Senate Investigation Committee at
every turn, and only 24 of 800 pages were ever released.

When the 9/11 families succeeded, through tears and threats in their
demands for an independent investigation, the government staffed it
with
insiders who had obvious conflicts of interest. It tried to appoint
cover-up wizard Henry Kissinger as executive director.

War hero, triple amputee, former Sen. Max Cleland, who was initially a
member, observed, "As each day goes by, we learn that this government
knew a lot more about these terrorists than it has ever
admitted...Let’s
chase this rabbit to the ground. They had a plan to go to war and when
9/11 happened. That’s what they did; they went to war."

He was speedily removed, and departed, calling the whole thing a
"disgusting scam."

Kean and Hamilton, who chaired the commission, recently came out with a
book affirming government obstruction of their inquiries. The 9/11
families reported that 70 percent of their questions were never
answered.

In the process of demanding an investigation, the grieving families of
9/11 victims were routinely intimidated by Congress and commission
members. They are still attacked in the media. Columnist Ann Coulter
recently reviled four 9/11 widows, dubbed the Jersey girls, as "media
whores" and "in the pocket of Clinton." One of them, Kristen
Breitweiser, responded. "Ann," she wrote, "the Jersey girls are
moms...Perhaps one day if you have children, you may understand the
sense of duty and obligation that parents feel towards their children
to
provide them with a safe and secure environment, both in the present
and
in the future...We wanted them to know that even though their fathers
were brutally killed, they could be and would be safer living in
America."

I was 21 and just out of college when John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
I watched ordinary people falling to their knees in shock and grief as
I
walked through the cold streets of Boston. They recognized a turning
point for the nation.

Uncomprehending, I hitchhiked to Dallas to watch Jack Ruby’s trial,
returning no wiser than before. Years later, the world became
acquainted
with Jim Garrison, the fearless New Orleans district attorney, who
exposed the CIA’s involvement in, and the Warren Commission’s shameless
whitewash of, the tragedy. Much of the evidence is locked away until
2028, when, as Napoleon would say, it probably won’t matter anymore.

James Earl Ray was tricked in 1969 into confessing to the assassination
of Martin Luther King, a man so officially idolized today that he has
his own holiday. Yet, in a book titled "An Act of State: The Execution
of Martin Luther King," by international lawyer William Pepper, a
friend
of King’s who later represented both Ray and the King family, the
murder
is definitively laid at the door of the FBI, the CIA, the military, the
Memphis police and organized crime figures. This was proved in a
wrongful death suit, in which the jury deliberated for only one hour,
won by the King family in 1999.

However, observed Pepper, "the silence which followed was deafening."

The major media, which, like the government, affects to adulate King,
refused to cover the story. King, who sorrowed that "the greatest
purveyor of violence on earth is my own government," had been murdered
to stop the anti-war movement.

Each of these national tragedies, the Kennedy and King assassinations
and 9/11, has changed the course of our nation, and driven it each time
toward war.

The famous words of President Eisenhower’s farewell address 45 years
ago
still reverberate today, as they warn against the "acquisition of
unwarranted influence by the military-industrial complex." An earlier
draft of the speech referred to the "military-industrial-congressional
complex," abbreviated to avoid offense to Congress.

The cover-ups following each of these events have been equally
catastrophic. Moreover, each emboldened the next. Because of the
whitewash of the Warren Commission, and the entrenchment of "national
security" as a justification for secrecy, the 9/11 Commission was able
to ignore essential facts with ease.

Thus has our political culture been transformed, as the old general
feared, into instruments of secrecy, concentration of wealth and power,
human rights abuses, privatization and militarism. They acquire a
solidity, which blurs the nation’s memory of our founding ideals:
liberty and justice for all. Brazen violations of the Constitution and
of international laws and treaties occur with impunity on a daily
basis,
in a manner which would have been unthinkable in Eisenhower’s time.

Many commentators, on the left and the right, have contemptuously
dismissed those who reject the official 9/11 myth as "conspiracy nuts."
This can only be explained by their fear of what might happen if 9/11
were proved to have been a takeover, or some other variation of an
inside job. Revelations of treason entail risks for those invested in
the established order.

But such things happen. Benjamin Franklin was once asked whether he
preferred a democracy or a republic. He smiled, and then replied, "a
republic--if you can keep it."
