Angelina Jolie's tattoos
Forget the metaphysical for a moment and consider the physical. The physical specimen of perfection that is Angelina Jolie. Now, bring back the spiritual element, which can be seen represented not only in her brilliant work on and off screen but is represented on her actual flesh.
Slogan/Saying—(nape of neck) “Know your rights” is a pretty straightforward comment, one Jolie lives by and campaigns to help others live by.
Khmer incantation—(left shoulder blade) these five rows of Khmer Jolie had designed in honor of her son, Maddox, and were inked for her by a Buddhist monk. The words are said to ward off bad luck and to avoid accidents (as cited in BBC News). The English translation is as follows:
May your enemies run far away from you.
If you acquire riches, may they remain yours always.
Your beauty will be that of Apsara (Khmer mythological celestial dancer).
Wherever you may go, many will attend, serve and protect you, surrounding you on all sides.
This tattoo covers the Japanese symbol for death—which Angie had originally found inspirational because it made her “live life to the fullest.”
Tiger—(lower back) Jolie got this tattoo in Bangkok from tattoo artist Sompong Kanphai, who “blessed” the piece by chanting an ancient hymn as he inked. She has reportedly said to feel her life was thereafter truly blessed, truly lucky.
This tattoo covers a window she had had done years earlier. Angelina explained (to host James Lipton and film and acting students, when she appeared on “Inside the Actors Studio”) that she removed/covered the window “because, while she used to spend all of her time looking out through windows wishing to be outside, she now lives there all of the time.”
American Indian symbols (?)—(lower back/dimple areas)
It is unclear what these two tribal symbols mean.
Cambodian coordinates—(left shoulder) the exact coordinates of her first three kids’ birthplaces are tattooed as follows:
N11 33 0 E104 51 00, N09 02 00 E038 45 00.
This covers a two-staged tattoo with much history: first there was a dragon with the name Billy Bob Thornton. After Jolie and Thornton divorced, she removed the name and kept the dragon. Now the dragon has been removed to pen down the new Cambodian coordinates tattoo.
Roman Numeral XIII—(inside left forearm)—evidently to show Jolie has no superstition issues with 13 as a bad luck number.
Quote—(left forearm) This tat is a Tennessee Williams line, “A prayer for the wild at heart, kept in cages.” She got this tattoo with her mother. Also interesting to me is how the actress and the six-degrees (or fewer) thing works here, with her having co-starred with Nic Cage in Gone in Sixty Seconds (wherein they were both wild) and with Nic having starred in Wild at Heart. Okay, it’s a reach, but I like it.
Moreover, Jolie finds significance in this piece she got after the making of Girl, Interrupted (for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, by the way): “I have a prayer for everyone when I see people who aren’t living fully, who aren’t happy. You can see someone in the grocery store who doesn’t look as if they fit in their life, and they have a dream they’re not fulfilling, and it makes me sad” (quoted from USA Today interview by Karen Thomas).
H–(inside of her left wrist)—is more commonly known as representative of two important men in her life, brother James Haven and fellow actor Timothy Hutton. Reportedly, Angelina had the tat done while she was dating Hutton, but since their break up (long since done and gone) now attributes the H to her brother.
(inside right forearm)—an Arabic phrase which translates to “Strength of Will.”
This tattoo covers up a tattoo she had gotten when with Billy Bob Thornton.
Cross and saying—(inside left hip) Jolie said she got the black cross the day before she married Jonny Lee Miller (back in 1995), a tat that was “…all symbolic, and…a good thing, nothing dark” (as quoted by USA Today writer Karen Thomas).
Next to the cross is the Latin statement, “Quod me nutrit me destruit,” which translates as “What nourishes me, destroys me.”
This tattoo covers a different black dragon tattoo she had gotten one night when she was drunk in Amsterdam; since she pretty quickly regretted that, she covered it with the above tat-combo.
Besides being an important collection when Jolie is set to do a nude or partially nude scene and the team has to cover the tats with make-up, the journal of images, symbols, and text chronicle typically happy, or good, times, she says. As reporter Karen Thomas of USA TODAY relates, Angelina Jolie uses her body as a diary and her tattoos as symbols of those good times as well as of moments of self-discovery and solution: “Usually all my tattoos came at good times…. A tattoo is something permanent when you’ve made a self-discovery, or something you’ve come to a conclusion about.”

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET
Riding in the country is a lot more fun then in the suburbs and metro areas. The latter is more for showing off the bike and how loud and crazy one can get.
Great to be back on again for now until the calling of more projects comes to pass. LOL!!!
Okay on the new Mod. I hope he's a Henry Rollins tattoo fan. :)
Hi hex!
I don't think I've ever been on a motorcycle before. I'm sure it's a lot of fun though. I'm too much of a scaredy cat!
awwwwwwwww you're a sweetheart too! Thanks for the compliment.
See the new mod up there (you know the tattoo board hijacker) lol
he's really good at calling stock picks and I think he awed the Swing board today. Only thing is, he's super duper hyper! lol
Hope to see ya more often!
T
Great concept Tina! You went to a shop with an excellent policy. BTW, I got new neighbors and the husband has three harleys. So far he let me use two of the three to go out "ridin". It's been a long time since I last drove a bike. It sure felt pretty good. I showed him the country roads and he loved it.
BTW, did I ever tell you that you're the Greatest?
Sorry for being away too long. I miss the Ihub charm.
Hi there hex!
very good to see you again sweetheart.
Mine was done recently and the needles and ink were all brand new in fresh wrappers that hadn't been opened before. I had to sign a statement saying that all products were brand new. I think regulations have tightened up a lot over the years.
I feel bad for those that did have them years ago and contracted a disease from unsanitary equipment.
Please visit more often :)
So what you are saying is that sharing the same needles is NOT good ? I thought the philosophy of sharing was a good thing. hmmm I should REconsider =/

Tattoos: Body Art or Curse?
Tattoos are marks or pictures made on different parts of body to convey certain meaning to others. Tattoo designs reflects the nature and thoughts of that person. Tattooing, a type of body art, is one of the oldest arts preserved and are very popular among youths.
History of tattoos and tattooing
Certain evidences of their practices by early tribal men have been found. Just like some Paleolithic artifacts found, which are classified as tattoo artist tools. Apart from this evidences which show that tattoos were applied to female figurines and human beings, in Egypt, between 4000 and 2000 B.C.E. The Libyon statues from the tomb of Seti show tattoo markings on the arms and legs.
Different motives of tattooing
Tattoos are used for many different reasons right from the olden days.
1) Tribe markings were done to maintain the identity of that particular tribe. This also helped them to recognize their friends in the midst of fierce wars. Another faith they had was after the death they will remain n contact with their friends.
2) Tattoos were practiced in marriages also. It was a belief that one was able to find his legal spouse or spouses in the afterlife even after separation of many years. Also as a tradition a woman who marries without first being tattooed, in the proper manner, is believed to commit a great sin.
3) Tattooing was used for youths to check for his strength. Boys were tested with the pain of tattooing and those found unsuccessful were considered to be unfit as a warrior. Girls who failed in this test were considered to be unsuitable for marriage because it was not possible for to bear the pains of child birth.
4) To show the identity to which group or gang (criminal group) they belong.
5) Pictures do communicate messages faster. They are used to show the state of mind generally to show their enthusiasm. Most of them use it as a support to their contestant during matches. Also some crazy fans put on the tattoos of their favorite actor or actresses.
6) In recent years tattoos have emerged as a sign of modern youth who puts tattoos to make his external appearance look attractive. They are believed to bring good fortune. In Burma if a person desires good luck he will have a tattoo of a parrot on his shoulder. In Thailand, a tattoo of God is also considered to bring good luck and maintain peace in ones life.
Effects of tattoos on health
1) There is a risk of catching a blood-borne disease or infection. Care should be taken that the needles should be sterilized before being used and must not be reused. Dispose the needle so that no one else can use it.
2) The dye remaining after insertion should be thrown and not again reused.
3) The tattooist must wear latex gloves. Care should taken so that no interruption occurs during the process.
4) Some tattoos turn out bad and cause infection. The skin may get swollen and itchy. Avoid getting water on part being tattoo is applied for one or two weeks because it may cause pains. These tattoos can be removed through surgery.
Nothing comes free with every good thing comes a bad thing but its upto individual what he wants. Proper precaution and care if taken can result in making proper use of tattoos. If properly handled from hygienic point of view it won't be a curse rather a gift for looking fashionable.
'Yakuza Moon' by Shoko Tendo
Yakuza Moon" is Shoko Tendo's memoirs.
Tendo was born into the family of a wealthy yakuza boss.
The book gives her first-person account of the yakuza society, including drugs, sex, and guns in Japan's very 'peaceful' society.
At school she was known as the "yakuza kid' by teachers and classmates.
At home, she was the victim of her father's temper and lifestyle.
At age 15 she was the member of a gang, and at 18 addicted to drugs.
The only relationships she had with men were those that are befitting men with pinkies missing who must fight daily for their existence.
Her parents died and she tried to join them at her own hand.
Empowerment came when she had herself tattooed.
Yakuza Moon, now translated into English, is a rare glimpse from an insider's view into the closed world of the yakuza society.
