The recent upward movement in the stock has been supported by better volumes. This may indicate that the stock may have recovered from the post-earnings fall. A few more days of positive movement are required to confirm this. The article on seekingalpha recently, had given a target of $33 for the stock, which is around the 52 week high made by the stock in May. The author is positive about the company and concluded by saying that 'ValueClick is a quality business, which is generating a lot of shareholder value for both short and long term. The company is being managed, as probably any private equity investor would have managed, using cash to make strategic acquisitions and share buybacks. Stock correction due to a temporary weakness is giving a good opportunity to invest'. The company may be a good long term story, but the sentiments have deteriorated over the past few months due to earnings misses. The last two earnings have led to sell-offs which has spoiled the party. Between October 2012 and May 2013, the stock had doubled, but it has corrected sharply after that. So the short term sentiments may change only if the company is able to do remarkably well in the next few quarters. It needs to beat estimates, and show some consistency in growth. It needs to remain dynamic, and leverage the possibilities in fast growing segments like native advertising / social media. IZEA (IZEA), a company in this field, has done well recently. For ValueClick, the valuations are reasonable, as the trailing P/E is 17.45 and forward P/E is 11.52. The PEG is 0.99, which is indicative of expectations of earnings growth over the next few years. The debt is also at manageable levels and the cash position is good. So it is a company with good potential, but needs show visible improvements soon.
The performance of the company in the last two quarters has dented the sentiments significantly. It is important to remember that the company has performed extremely well over the last few years. Also, the stock has done great despite the huge correction over the last few months. The stock is still around 40% up on 52 week basis, though it has corrected by more than 30% from the 52 week high made in May. The stock has recovered a bit from the recent sell off and seems to be stable. However, the recovery over the past few days has not been backed by volumes. The Q2'13 earnings miss led to downgrades and cut in price-targets by many analysts. However, some analysts consider the sharp decline as a buying opportunity for the long term. An article on seekingalpha expressed hope of better performance by the company in the long term. The author mentioned that the acquisitions by the company over the last few years have helped it adapt to the changes in the business environment. Especially for online advertising, he mentioned acquisitions by the company in emerging segments of online advertising like Dotomi (behavioral targeting) and Greystripe (mobile advertising). As per the author, the valuations are better compared to the ad-tech peers like Facebook (FB), Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO). Valueclick is likely to face more competition from existing and emerging players. There are some segments, specially in online advertising which are expected to grow faster. Social media sponsorship & native ads is a fast growing segment with big and small players like IZEA (IZEA) expected to do well. For Valueclick, the guidance for the third quarter is for revenue between $164-$168 million, adjusted EBITDA of $53-$55 million and GAAP net income per diluted common share in the range of $0.30-$0.31. It desperately needs to beat the guidance a couple of times to change the sentiments.
The last quarter earnings and guidance for the second quarter indicated that there may be some slowdown in growth of Valueclick. The company reported 13% growth in revenues in the last quarter, and the net income went up by around 22%. However, this was below what the analysts had expected, and the guidance for the next quarter is also not very robust. This has led to a fall in the stock, and it has now corrected by around 10% over the last three months. It has fallen by around 20% from its 52 week high made a month ago. Last few days have shown some recovery, but the confidence is still not there. Despite this, last 12 months have been good for the investors as the stock has appreciated by more than 52%, and is more than 66% above its 52 week low made in August. As mentioned in an article on insidermonkey, the slow growth in the economy may affect the revenues and the net income. Further, the competition in online advertising is immense and increasing. New concepts are emerging and smaller companies like IZEA (IZEA) are bringing innovative ideas to attract advertisers. However, though the growth may be slow, the awareness about the power of online advertising is increasing. More and more companies are allocating additional budget to advertising on the internet. Social media platforms are being preferred for their impact. So the future for Valueclick will depend upon how well it is able to leverage the future growth in the market. The stock can perform well because it scores on the valuations front also. It is trading at 18 times ttm earnings and 12 times forward earnings. The debt is reasonable at $80 million, and the cash of $129 million indicates good liquidity position. The next earnings will be crucial in determining the short term performance of the stock.
