The Mid Bedfordshire District Council recently moved into its new building in the town of Chicksands, England, featuring a top-of-the-line audio system outfitted with newly installed SLS Loudspeakers. Audiovisual and integrated technology consultant Shen Milsom & Wilke was tasked with identifying a system that could provide exceptional sound during board meetings and special community events, but also offer little obstruction for audio visual presentation usage, a perfect balance it found in SLS Line Arrays.

The architectural composition of the room posed acoustical challenges in sound deflection and distortion resulting from its hard and concrete surfaces, high ceiling and large glass window. To overcome these problems, the room was strategically equipped with two sets of three SLS LS6593S ribbon line array speakers specially geared toward extreme control over vertical dispersion. The SLS loudspeakers were mounted on either side of the large window, achieving clear and even sound distribution.

“Since Mid Bedfordshire District Council is regarded as a governmental hub and voice within its community, it is important that it be equipped with a superior sound system that can universally support its various needs,” says John Prohs, senior associate at Shen Milsom & Wilke. “SLS Loudspeakers was the ideal fit for the room’s versatile nature, offering a unique package of affordability, flexibility and simplicity. The new loudspeakers present high-performance in its tonal quality, intelligibility and audio distribution control.”

Andrew Paul Smith, a senior associate at the audiovisual and integrated technology consultant firm, adds, “The outstanding SLS system used within the council chamber is nothing short of remarkable, providing clarity and speech intelligibility – complimenting the room’s acoustical design and composition. The council is delighted with its superior sound and amazed at its wonderful, smooth response capabilities.”

SLS Loudspeakers will introduce its new 8290 multipurpose portable PA /box at NAMM 2007 (Hall B, Booth #5222). While its vast applications include multimedia installations, public speaking and speeches, as well as house and stage monitor usage, the 8290’s full-range passive high-quality dual 8’’ design incorporates a compact multi-angled cabinet with maximum sound pressure levels.

Established as a solution for professional applications that require the highest quality and intelligibility of sound, the 8290 is equipped with SLS’ PRD500 planar ribbon driver that is contained within a 90 degree die cast aluminum waveguide. Its dual 8” woofers provide increased control in the vertical plane.

“The SLS 8290 offers the best of both worlds – providing professional sound with simplicity and convenience,” says Jeff Lowry, Director of Marketing for SLS. “While its compact, multi-angle cabinet design allows for quick interchangeability for vast applications, it also distributes exceptional sound quality suitable for a variety of monitor and main applications.

SLS Loudspeakers is introducing its RLA/4 (LS7500) full-range, bi-amped true line source array module at NAMM 2007 (Hall B, Booth #5222). The RLA/4 was developed for a wide range of applications from permanent sound reinforcement installations in churches, auditoriums, arenas and performing arts centers, to a professional portable PA system with the highest performance characteristics expected from an SLS product.

“Although the RLA/4 is compact in size, it meets SPL line array performance requirements for a wide variety of venues,” says Tom Harrison, director of engineering for SLS. “Its high frequency section features a high performance PRD500 planar ribbon transducer designed and manufactured by SLS. The unique design and properties of the planar ribbon driver allows precise acoustical coupling of the array and hence, full utilization of line source (cylindrical waves) benefits.”

The low frequency section uses two high-powered 6.5” drivers utilizing a demodulation ring magnet system providing a third less harmonic distortion and reducing inductance modulation by 50 percent. This provides an open and clear sound despite loud listening levels. Additionally, the low frequency drivers feature a die-cast basket with a patented Intercooler system.

The system offers 90-degree wide symmetrical horizontal coverage and offers SLS’ free LASS prediction software that visually shows the ideal set up locations for even, predictable sound coverage of any room.

Each RLA/4 module is designed for bi-amplification. All array rigging is included on the cabinet that is made from sturdy ¾” 13-ply Baltic Birch and includes splay options from 1 to 10 degrees between boxes
