No.
Just love history, that's all.

From what I understand his army stopped at North Carolina simply because they ran out of supplies.
Ordinary
Nice ....Black Jack..... You have a Miltary History Degree?
Sherman felt no pity for South Carolina......he felt they started the War so he had little pity....he calmed down when he got to NC!
More or less, however Bradley liked to see himself as a protege of General Pershing; an officer who was calculating...yet bold, professional and fair.
Ordinary
He was getting pretty fed up with the Confederate "resolve".
He had set a goal to burn Atlanta down to prove this point not ONLY to the Confederates. But also to Grant.
And that he did.....Atlanta was nearly razed.
But Sherman didn't stop there......
Ordinary
He knew what it would take remember this war was dragging on and killed about 5% the Male population ....it had to end!
I agree...... He and Bradley from WWII were cut from the same cloth!
He wasn't the best, he was ONE of the best.
He certainly wasn't a "cordial" opponent. He introduced the doctrine of total warfare when he ordered everything not bearing a Union flag destroyed, burned and killed.
He was ruthless, harsh, abrasive and incredibly intelligent.
You could say he was the antithesis of Longstreet.
Ordinary
I liked General Longstreet.
He was reserved, experienced, and quite intelligent.
He was a true gentleman.
Ordinary
Wait one forgot about Sherman.......he was a General....... The Best the North had!
I liked Hooker but he broke at Challcelorsville .....he himself said he lost his nerve!
lol...yes, indeed they were asses.
They were all asses. Except for General Lee. And Abraham Lincoln.
Ordinary
McCellan Was an organizer...... Not a fighter.......however, that being said The Army of the Potomac ended the war......Lions led by Asses!
They most certainly did, unfortunately.
Thing is though, they had the momentum earlier in the war. And they had some exceptionally talented officers.....of which COULD have toppled McClelland's army HAD they quickly seized the initiative earlier on during the war.
Ordinary
True but the South wasted so many men and supplies on those worthless forays into the North and could have used those to better use fighting a defensive war!
No.
They lacked an industrial base. Which forced the Confederates to rely on imports from, say, England....of which were denied entry thanks to a Union blockade.
Ordinary
it was a close thing
Never talked to his dad again!
Like Rommel he had no supply lines.....total waste!
If Rommel had held North Africa.....Different game... Something with VA.....
Lee was great tactically but not strategically ...... Worth 5 divisions on a battle field......could not win a War! Ie Hannibal!
it turned out to be, lee 's hand was kind of forced. he needed to big score away from virginia.
I think Gettysburg was a huge mistake......great loss of men the South could not afford!
but that leadership.....
The Army of the Potomac was as fine an Army assembled as ever! Reminds me of the Roman Legions!
they needed to win it in 62, the should of pushed into dc then. maybe they could of pulled it off then.
So could The South have won the war?
the union needed the practice
No but that was a slug festival! No tactical or strategic value just a slobber knocker!
hold on, i do.....ever been to antietam? awesome!
This board is too specialized ....nobody gives a Fuck about military history!
Antietam was a waste..... Just prolonged the War!
Lol Bloody Lane, ......The Corn Field.......wow.....that battle was so fierce.......Two bullets lodged in mid air!

2012 will have several major Civil War battles 150th anniversaries. I am hoping they have a reenactment at Antietam since I only live about a two hour drive from there.
