Press Release Issued by General Dynamics: General Dynamics Awarded Contract for Laser Energetics' Dazer LaserTM
22 Sep 2009 Laser Energetics' Dazer Laser(TM) Trademark Application Withstands Legal Challenge
Laser Energetics, Inc. (Pink Sheets: LNGT) today reported that its new Dazer Laser(TM) Light Fighting Technologies has withstood a challenge to its trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office brought by Taser International, Inc. (Taser"). Taser contended that Laser Energetics' application in the USPTO to register its "Dazer Laser" trademark should be rejected because the "Dazer Laser" mark was confusingly similar to Taser's family of "Taser" trademarks. Following a period of pretrial discovery and depositions in the USPTO proceeding, Taser International terminated its opposition with prejudice. The termination with prejudice now precludes Taser from challenging the registration of Laser Energetics' "Dazer Laser" trademark.
Robert D. Battis, CEO and Founder of Laser Energetics, stated, "We have maintained from the beginning of this action that the objections raised by Taser International were without merit. We expect to make a major impact on the law enforcement and military markets with our "Non-Lethal - Less Violent" Dazer Laser(TM) - Light Fighting Technologies, which we believe will replace many of the current Non-Lethal - More Violent close proximity weapons in use today. Having won this battle, we are continuing to move forward expeditiously to bring our products to the marketplace. We expect to be in a position to make some exciting new announcements in the very near future."

Extract of the Patent Details:
"Laser
Not all lasers can be dual pulsed. For example, conventional small excimer lasers are very difficult to dual pulse due to the gas life time, especially at different frequencies. On the other hand, an Alexandrite laser, available from Laser Energetics (Mercerville, N.J.) may be dual pulsed in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. Dual pulsing a laser can be achieved in several conventional ways depending on whether the ultraviolet ("UV") outputs are provided at the same time or separated in both space and time. More specifically, the laser may be configured to have extra-cavity frequency conversion using conventional techniques, wherein there is provided a fundamental alexandrite frequency from the tuned cavity, resulting from flash lamp or diode pumping, followed by frequency tripling using a conventional optical filter or frequency selection optical component, such as a birefringent tuner (BRT) or etalon, and non-linear optical crystals. In one embodiment, dual time separated outputs may be provided by splitting the fundamental cavity beam extra-cavity, adding a delay line in one path and creating two frequency conversion channels, In another embodiment, dual space separated outputs may be provided using conventional techniques by creating two tuned cavities, pumped by a single diode pumping source, with one beam path configured for 744 nm emission (which frequency triples to 248 nm), and the other configured for 750 nm (which frequency triples to 250 nm). These two beam paths contain the appropriate crystals and optical components to provide dual UV wavelength outputs simultaneously using one laser, but with half the power in each UV output, compared to a single channel architecture using the same pump power. With this configuration it is possible to increase the pump power without exceeding the cavity damage threshold, thereby increasing the UV outputs to >1/2 the energy of a single channel architecture."

[F] Interesting Articles
MOTLEY FOOL newsletter - outlook for Defense Companies and specifically GD and Laser Energetics:
By Rich Smith (TMFDitty)
June 18, 2010
The best defense is a good offense, or so the saying goes. And so it was that HSBC opened a new front in the analyst wars yesterday, initiating coverage on a trio of new defense picks: General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) to outperform, and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and BAE Systems to tie the market. Neutral ratings being a bit blah to write about, though, we'll be focusing today almost exclusively on the single limb that HSBC has clambered out on -- its "outperform" rating on General D.
So, will the stock truly outperform the market?
Give us a clue, HSBC!
'Fraid not. Turns out, not a single major news outlet contains any details on HSBC's "buy" rating on General Dynamics. We know the upgrade happened, but we don't know why it happened.
But we can guess. First off, General Dynamics sells for less than 11 times trailing earnings, is expected to grow these earnings at better than 7% annually over the next five years, and pays a satisfying 2.5% dividend to its shareholders. Nor does it hurt to see that the company generates slightly more free cash flow than it reports as net income, suggesting the stock may be even a bit cheaper than it appears. Taken as a whole, these facts may lead us to conclude that the stock is at least fairly valued.
For the stock to become undervalued, however, we're really going to need faster growth than just 7%. But where is that growth going to come from? In recent days, General Dynamics has given us a few clues, in the form of:
- A $642 million contract, just awarded, to modernize the ground control system for NASA's tracking data and relay satellites.
- A General D-led consortium that received a $220 million research grant to develop robotic air and ground systems for the Army.
- The company's selection by Pink-Sheeted Laser Energetics to build the latter's Dazer Laser on contract.
Funny same, serious opportunity?
To my Foolish eye, it's that last point that looks most interesting -- the contract to manufacture Dazer Lasers. As you can probably guess from the funny name -- and its similarity in both rhyme and reason to TASER (Nasdaq: TASR) -- the Dazer Laser is a laser … that dazes its victim. It's a flashlight on steroids, basically, that dazzles its subjects and renders them incapable of offensive action. The military and law enforcement are both potential markets.
This is, by the way, the first time I recall hearing of General D's direct involvement in the laser business, an industry heretofore dominated by the likes of Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) and Boeing, both of which are developing substantially more lethal directed energy weapons than the Dazer. But it's far from the first time the General has deigned to occupy the role of contract manufacturer. In years past, we've seen the General drafted to:
- Build satellites for Motley Fool Rule Breakers recommendation GeoEye (Nasdaq: GEOY).
- Help Force Protection (Nasdaq: FRPT) fill out its MRAP quota.
- Give incumbent Humvee manufacturer AM General a leg up to build America's Next Top Humvee.
Foolish takeaway
Whether HSBC's right that General Dynamics will beat the market over the next 12 months -- I don't know. But contracts like the one just inked with Dazer Laser don't just give the General an opportunity to accelerate projected growth. They provide further evidence that this company remains a cornerstone of the defense and aerospace industries.
My advice: Bet on the General to beat the market at your discretion. But think twice before betting against it. General Dynamics is here to stay.
