Sprott Will Signal Silver Bottom

I’ve been watching the Sprott Physical Silver Trust daily chart for over a year now. It gave a very strong signal for a top with a daily reading of a 26% premium last April when silver topped. Cash silver was only $46 an ounce but investors buying into the “Silver is going to the moon, tomorrow,” story paid an incredible $57.73 an ounce. Needless to say they are sadder and poorer today. I may have mentioned how foolish it is to buy at tops.

Anything that gives you a clear picture of investor psychology can be used as a strong signal of when to buy or when to sell. With all the noise in the market of JP Morgan and manipulation and silver is going to the moon, we still suffer from a dearth of valid indicators. You may well believe silver is the most manipulated commodity in the history of the known and unknown universe but that doesn’t tell you when to buy or sell. Actually a belief in manipulation doesn’t give you any information. If you are so naïve that you think there is such a thing as a non-manipulated market you probably won’t be in touch with your money for long.

But other than a few days in February of this year when the premium on Sprott Silver went up to an incredible 34%, I think you can use extremes of emotion as measured by the Sprott Silver Trust to gage silver buy points and sell points.

Since October 29, 2010 until now, and that’s 17.5 months, the premium on the Sprott Physical Silver Trust has been below 5% only some 9 days. Two of those days came this month so in almost 17 months; the premium has been below 5% only 7 days.

A bottom in silver is close. Watch the premium, it will signal the bottom.

The S&P 500-to-gold ratio is just one of many ways to evaluate the gold bull market. While I can't predict the future prices of the S&P 500 or gold, this short historical analysis illustrates that today's ratio is not even close to treading on new territory. The reason why gold is smashed at 3:00 AM EST is because the AM Fix is at 5:30 AM EST. Like the PM Fix at 10:00 AM EST – which I spend more time focusing on, the Cartel purposely smashes gold down beforehand to subdue “official” prices. I’d bet they somehow earn more money on the spread, too – likely in illicit fashion – but that’s another story for another day.

SILVER POISED TO OUTPERFORM AGAIN

Last week, the world's stock markets cheered the coordinated central bank efforts to supply dollar liquidity to the world banking system via lower than market rates. This clearly resulted in a "risk-on" trade across the board, and we expect more to follow in the weeks ahead as the ECB lower rates, and China moves quickly to halt its declining economy.



Our interest in this new round of money printing and stimulus stands in the precious metals again such as gold, silver and platinum. We can make a very bullish case for each at this point, but we'll focus on the "high-beta" silver futures contract. All healthy precious metal bull markets are led by silver; and we sense that silver is now poised to outperform once again - with new contract highs forging above the $50/oz level.

The techncials of the trade are rather simple: silver has traced out a rough 9-month bullish "flag pattern", which tends to resolve itself in the direction of the major trend, which is higher given the pattern of higher lows. Also, we point out that the 20-week stochastic is back to levels that in the past have coincided with rather major bottoms. The only caveat is the rolling over 250-week moving average, which on many occassions has shown its bullish and bearish worth. We are of the opinion, that once the 250-week is violated to the upside at $35.50 - this a rally of massive proportion shall be upon us. Lest we not add that that Wednesday's daily trade put in place a key reversal higher - which in our mind is sufficient to consider long positions at current levels.
