Five (5) lessons to make you think about the way we treat people.
1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.
During my second month of college, our professor
gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student
and had breezed through the questions until I read
the last one:
'What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?'
Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the
cleaning woman several times. She was tall,
dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name?
I handed in my paper, leaving the last question
blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if
the last question would count toward our quiz grade.
'Absolutely,' said the professor. 'In your careers,
you will meet many people. All are significant. They
deserve your attention and care, even if all you do
is smile and say 'hello.'
I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her
name was Dorothy.
2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain
One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African-American
woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway
trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had
broken down and she desperately needed a ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.
A young white man stopped to help her, generally
unheard of in those conflict-filled 60s. The man
took her to safety, helped her get assistance and
put her into a taxicab.
She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his
address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a
knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a
giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A
special note was attached..
It read:
'Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway
the other night. The rain drenched not only my
clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along.
Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying
husband's bedside just before he passed away... God
bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving
others.'
Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.
3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.
In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less,
a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and
sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.
'How much is an ice cream sundae?' he asked.
'Fifty cents,' replied the waitress.
The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and
studied the coins in it.
'Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?' he inquired.
By now more people were waiting for a table and the
waitress was growing impatient...
'Thirty-five cents,' she brusquely replied.
The little boy again counted his coins.
'I'll have the plain ice cream,' he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on
the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice
cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress
came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the
table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish,
were two nickels and five pennies
You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had
to have enough left to leave her a tip.
4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.
In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a
roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if
anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the
King's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by
and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the
King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did
anything about getting the stone out of the way.
Then a peasant came along carrying a load of
vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the
peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the
stone to the side of the road. After much pushing
and straining, he finally succeeded. After the
peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed
a purse lying in the road where the boulder had
been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note
from the King indicating that the gold was for the
person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The
peasant learned what many of us never understand!
Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.
5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...
Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness. The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.
I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, 'Yes, I'll do it if it will
save her.' As the transfusion progressed, he lay in
bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did,
seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his
face grew pale and his smile faded.
He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, 'Will I start to die right away?'
Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the
doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his
sister all of his blood in order to save her.
Now get on with it!
'Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like you do when nobody's watching.'
NOW more than ever - Peace ... Pass It On

Lawyer: Chapman's Son Sold N-Word Tape
HONOLULU (AP) - Television bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman's son taped a private phone conversation in which the reality star used a racial slur repeatedly, then sold it to a tabloid for "a lot of money," Chapman's lawyer said Thursday.
"I guess because of whatever level of anger he had of his father, he felt the need to express it in that manner," attorney Brook Hart told The Associated Press.
Tucker Chapman could not be reached for comment; no one answered the telephone at a Honolulu number listed under his name.
The National Enquirer on Wednesday posted on its Web site a clip of a conversation in which Duane Chapman, star of the hit A&E series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," repeatedly used the N-word in reference to Tucker's girlfriend.
Chapman later apologized to his son and the woman, then learned about how the tape got into the tabloid's hands, Hart said.
A&E has suspended production of the series, saying the network takes the matter seriously.
"When the inquiry is concluded, we will take appropriate action," A&E spokesman Michael Feeney said in a statement Thursday.
The show, in its fifth season and one of A&E's top-rated programs, has not been canceled.
An after-hours telephone message for David Perel, the Enquirer's editor in chief, was not immediately returned. But earlier in the day, Perel declined to say how the tape was obtained, saying what mattered was what's on the tape.
In the conversation, Chapman urges Tucker to break up with his girlfriend. He also expresses concern about the girlfriend trying to tape and go public about the TV star's use of the N-word.
Chapman has said he was "disappointed in his choice of a friend, not due to her race, but her character. However, I should have never used that term." He also said he was ashamed of himself and pledged to make amends.
Hart said his client is not a racist and vowed never to use the word again.
"I have never seen anything that suggests he judges people by the color of their skin or racial background or anything but on their character," he said. "Duane lost his composure and made very, very inappropriate remarks, for which he truly regrets."
The TV series follows Chapman and his tattooed crew as they track down bail jumpers in Hawaii and other states. The show also stars some members of Chapman's family, but Tucker Chapman is not regularly featured.
The Honolulu-based bounty hunter first grabbed headlines for apprehending serial rapist and Max Factor heir Andrew Luster in Mexico in 2003.

Curtis resigns from Legislature
Wednesday, October 31, 2007
BY JEFFREY MIZE and KATHIE DURBIN, Columbian staff writers
State Rep. Richard Curtis, whose claim of being the victim of an extortion scheme resulted in disclosure of raw details about his sexual behavior, resigned from the Legislature today.
In a statement released by the Republican caucus, Curtis, R-La Center, said "Today I submitted my letter of resignation to Gov. (Chris) Gregoire effective immediately. While I believe we've done some good and helped a lot of people during the time I served in the Legislature, events that have recently come to light have hurt a lot of people. I sincerely apologize for any pain my actions may have caused.
“This has been damaging to my family, and I don't want to subject them to any additional pain that might result from carrying out this matter under the scrutiny that comes with holding public office,” Curtis' statement said.
"I am very disappointed by the news reports of the conduct by Rep. Curtis last week in Spokane," according to a statement from House Minority Leader Richard DeBolt, R-Chehalis. "After discussing this matter with House Republican leaders, he has submitted his resignation, which we feel is best for everyone involved.
"The troubling details continue to emerge, however, (and) it has become clear that he can no longer effectively represent the constituents who elected him. We pray that Richard and his family have the strength and support they need to meet the personal challenges they face.”
A retired fire captain and two-term legislator, Curtis has been feeling the glare of the spotlight since Monday, when it was disclosed he was involved in an incident in Spokane last week with a 26-year-old man. According to a report filed by Spokane police, Curtis met the man at a porn store in the Spokane Valley, and later had sex with him in a downtown hotel room. The man, Cody Castagna, claims he was promised $1,000 for unprotected sex.
Curtis was in town attending a pre-session retreat for Republican legislators. He denied being gay or having sex with Castagna in an interview earlier this week. But a police report on the incident said Curtis had told investigators that he'd had sex with Castagna, though not unprotected and not for money. Curtis was also seen participating in a sex act with a different man at the porn shop, while Curtis was wearing women's undergarments.
KXLY-TV is reporting that Spokane City Attorney Howard Delaney said Wednesday morning that he intends to review police reports in the attempted blackmailing of Curtis to determine whether or not Curtis should face solicitation charges.
Delaney confirmed that once the Spokane County Prosecutor Steve Tucker's office has done its review of police reports detailing the blackmail case that he would look at the case to determine whether or not Curtis solicited Castagna for sex.

N.J. Missing Mayor Was Seeking Treatment
By WAYNE PARRY – 1 day ago
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The mystery of this gambling resort town's missing mayor appeared to be close to a conclusion Tuesday, with a request before a judge to declare his office vacant.
An attorney for Mayor Robert Levy explained the town leader's two-week disappearance involved time at a Somerset County clinic known for treatment of substance abuse and mental health issues.
He has been home since Thursday, his attorney Edwin Jacobs said.
City officials last heard from Levy on Sept. 26, when he called in sick, climbed into his city-issued Dodge Durango and seemingly vanished. His aides have said only that he was hospitalized somewhere, and would not disclose his condition.
Members of the City Council say they're fed up with the disappearing mayor, who is under federal investigation for embellishing his Army service in Vietnam, and have asked a judge to clear the way for the council president to take over as interim mayor.
Councilman William "Speedy" Marsh was preparing to take office immediately, said Marsh's attorney, James Leonard.
The mayor's attorney said he met briefly with a state judge who scheduled a Friday hearing to discuss the vacancy request.
Councilman Bruce Ward has called Levy's disappearance "a national embarrassment."
Jacobs said the mayor checked himself into the Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead on either Sept. 26 or 27.
"He was there for a week, and he has been convalescing at home since last Thursday," said Jacobs, who would not say why Levy had sought treatment.
The lawyer promised to issue a statement on Wednesday with more details of Levy's situation, and declined further comment. A phone message left at Levy's home was not returned.
According to the clinic's Web site, the clinic is a private, not-for-profit behavioral health care system.
"At Carrier, hospital stays tend to be brief, with the goal of crisis intervention, medical stabilization and transition to the next appropriate level of care," according to the Web site. "Treatment teams consist of a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse, licensed clinical social workers, allied clinical therapists and certified addiction counselors,"
Marsh's attorney said he believes Levy's resignation is "imminent."
"There's nothing in play that suggests that Levy is going to return," Leonard said. "We are preparing for a smooth, swift and immediate transition that will allow Mr. Marsh to take over as mayor. There is a plan in place."
Mayoral spokesman Nick Morici said he does not know what Levy's plans are. Levy's wife, Hazel, who also works at City Hall, said she also didn't know and declined to comment further.
City Business Administrator Domenic Cappella, who is serving as acting mayor, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.
Last fall, the Press of Atlantic City reported that the Vietnam veteran's claims that he was a member of the Green Berets were untrue. He apologized, but federal authorities have been looking into whether the 64-year-old Levy made that claim to increase his veteran's benefit payments.
Opponents were already gathering signatures in a fledgling recall drive when he disappeared. They criticized the mayor, who took office last year, for his sporadic attendance at council meetings and his ties with one of three former council members to plead guilty since last year in a corruption case.

Regulatory Developments
On September 19, 2007, a law passed by the Arizona legislature took effect that makes it a felony to accept or place a wager on a horse race anywhere in Arizona except at a licensed track or off-track betting parlor. In light of this new law, we have ceased to accept wagers from Arizona residents. We are examining our alternatives, including a challenge to the constitutionality of this new law.
On September 26, 2007, we also ceased to accept all wagers from customers in the District of Columbia. The Oregon Racing Commission (ORC), the entity that licenses our advanced deposit wagering (ADW) operations, has informed us that it had concluded that ADW companies should no longer accept wagers from the District of Columbia. Accordingly, we promptly ceased to accept wagers from District of Columbia customers. Our previously approved ORC operating plans had included the District of Columbia as an "allowed" wagering jurisdiction.
Customers from Arizona and the District of Columbia, in the aggregate, represented 2.7% of handle for the year ended December 31, 2006 and 2.5% of handle for the six months ended June 30, 2007. We do not expect the inability to accept wagers in Arizona and the District of Columbia, either individually or in the aggregate, will have a material adverse impact on our financial position, results of operations or cash flow.
Legal Proceedings
On September 19, 2007, Colonial Downs, L.P. and the Virginia Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association filed a lawsuit against our company in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The complaint alleges that we are operating as an ADW provider in the Commonwealth of Virginia and seeks a declaration of the rights and obligations of the parties under the Virginia Horse Racing and Pari-Mutuel Wagering Act. The complaint also seeks injunctive relief enjoining us from conducting ADW operations in Virginia until we contract with the plaintiffs and obtain a license under the Virginia statute and regulations. We disagree with the complaint allegations and intend to fully and vigorously defend the lawsuit. We continue to accept wagers from Virginia residents.
Other Developments
On October 4, 2007, a search warrant issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California was served on our company headquarters in Woodland Hills, California, by special agents for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, for various records including, among other things, business records of our IRG business related to the wagering activities of certain customers. The investigation is being run by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Las Vegas, Nevada. At this point, we understand that the company is not a target of the investigation. We are cooperating with the U.S. government in their investigation.
lol, his explanation was just too funny.
DUII Charge Not The First For 'Little People' Star
UPDATED: 6:52 pm PDT July 31, 2007
HELVETIA, Ore. -- Matt Roloff, who stars in the show "Little People, Big World" on The Learning Channel, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants. Slideshow: Celebrity Mug Shots
Roloff appeared in Washington County Court on Monday.
On June 19 at 11:52 p.m., a Washington County deputy pulled over Roloff, 45, in his white 2005 Chevrolet van as he was driving west on West Union Road near Cornelius Pass Road.
Deputies said Roloff failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. He was taken to the Washington County Jail and cited on charges of DUII, refusing a breath test and failing to drive within a lane.
In a statement from TLC, a spokesperson said they will not comment until court proceedings have run their course.
Last month's incident wasn't the first time Roloff has been linked to a driving under the influence charge. In 2003, Roloff had a DUII charge dismissed after he completed an alcohol diversion program.
“Little People, Big World” is a reality television show that focuses mostly on the lives of Roloff, his wife and his son, all of whom are dwarfs.
Roloff and his family live on a farm in Helvetia. The Roloffs were most recently in the news last fall when their 9-year-old son, Jacob, was injured by a pumpkin catapult on the family's farm.
