NASA has resisted the use of Ion engines in the past. But with the Japanese engine proving itself and VASIMR finally getting the attention it has long deserved, NASA is finally taking a good look at ION engines.
Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, and NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today that they have successfully operated a Japanese HAYABUSA low power microwave ion engine at Aerojet's facility in Redmond, Wash. These ion propulsion systems provide propellant efficiencies more than 10 times higher than those of conventional propulsion systems for use on low Earth orbit, geosynchronous and deep space missions.
This test is an important step in support of a teaming agreement between Aerojet and NEC Corporation to jointly supply HAYABUSA-derived ion propulsion systems for the U.S. and Japanese aerospace markets. Representatives from U.S. industry and government, the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and NASA gathered to witness the test and to discuss potential future missions. The test demonstrates that the robust design can be operated successfully by Aerojet engineers and technicians.
The HAYABUSA spacecraft successfully retrieved the first-ever samples of an asteroid and returned them to earth on June 13, 2010 after a seven-year journey to the asteroid Itokawa. After a failure of the chemical propulsion and attitude control systems, with ingenuity and persistence, Japanese engineers used the ion propulsion system to complete the mission and return the samples. The ion engines use microwaves to ionize the xenon propellant and innovative carbon fiber grids to accelerate it, enabling long life and high mission reliability.

Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, today was recognized by Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) for the company's installation of a more energy-efficient ultraviolet (UV) treatment system in one of its environmental groundwater remediation facilities.
Existing equipment was projected to consume 270kW of power to treat the design flow to discharge standards. Following the installation of the more efficient UV system in Oct. 2010, the Groundwater Extraction and Treatment (GET) facility's energy usage has dropped from 270 kilowatts per hour to 120 kilowatts per hour, resulting in a savings of 150 kilowatts per hour (more than 1,000,000 kWh per year). The amount of energy saved at the facility in just two days equals the amount of energy used by the average California household in one year.
Aerojet estimates that the system will result in an approximate annual savings of $120,000 in energy costs. SMUD also provided an incentive of $119,171 to support the installation of the more efficient UV system.

Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, announced today that the company has produced 1000 solid rocket motors for the MK234 Nulka active expendable decoy. A ceremony attended by congressional, diplomatic, Navy and industry officials was held at Aerojet's Orange County, Va. facility today to commemorate the milestone.
Nulka provides highly effective self defense for naval surface combatants against modern anti-ship missiles (ASM). On launch, Nulka flies a trajectory that when combined with electronic radiation lures ASMs away from their intended targets. As an autonomous flight vehicle, the Nulka is capable of operating over a wide range of environments and of positioning its payload with a high level of accuracy.
The decoy employs a unique and technically challenging hovering rocket principle supplemented by solid-state microprocessor autopilot and thrust vector control.
Developed in cooperation with Australia, the word Nulka is of Australian Aboriginal origin and means "be quick." Working with Nulka prime contractor BAE Systems Australia, Aerojet manufactures and tests Nulka solid propellant rocket motors at its Orange, Va. load assembly and pack facility. This important ship self-defense system, currently fitted to more than 130 ships, provides the U.S., Canadian and Royal Australian Navy fleets with long-range protection from aerial threats and ensures the ability of the fleets to safely accomplish their primary force projection mission. The system currently is being installed in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard deepwater fleets on an accelerated basis.

Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, announced today that it has been selected by The Boeing Company to supply heavy alloy weights for Boeing's revolutionary Composite Main Rotor Blade (CMRB) in support of the AH-64D Apache Block III (AB3) program.
Under the initial contract, Aerojet will deliver completed rotor weights to support Boeing's production of the U.S. Army's low rate initial production requirements for AB3 (approximately 43 aircraft) in 2010. Completed deliveries are anticipated by 2012. In an effort to enhance battle support effectiveness and reduce operational and support costs, the Army intends to procure or upgrade more than 600 aircraft by 2025. Several hundred more Apaches are also candidates for the upgrade and there are current plans for more than 100 additional new build airframes in the near future.

The precision-machined tungsten alloy weights perform a critical function in establishing aeromechanical stability of the blade. Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, and its Russian partner United Engine Corporation (UEC), announced today the signing of a cooperation agreement regarding their next steps in the companies' cooperative efforts to provide NK-33 and AJ26 rocket engines to the commercial launch market.
The cooperative efforts of Aerojet and UEC will include marketing, sales, technical support, testing and a range of activities for the eventual re-start of engine production – all designed to provide commercial customers with high-performing, cost-competitive NK-33 and AJ26 hydrocarbon engines. This agreement builds on more than 15 years of cooperation between Aerojet and JSC "N.D. Kuznetzov" (NDK), which is managed by UEC, to provide launch propulsion for the growing global commercial space market.
Under the agreement, UEC will be responsible for marketing and sale of the modern NK-33 in the Russian Federation; checkout, testing and delivery of additional NK-33 rocket engines to Aerojet for modification into the AJ26; and eventual re-start of NK-33 production in Russia. UEC will also provide support of the NK-33 on vehicles launched from the Russian Federation.

Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, successfully completed a second series of vibration and altitude hot-fire tests on its 160-pound thrust mono-propellant rocket engine planned for use on NASA's Orion spacecraft.
Aerojet is providing all of the engines for Orion's crew and service modules for Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor to NASA for developing the Orion crew exploration vehicle as the nation's next generation spacecraft for future exploration throughout our solar system.
The objective of the test program was to characterize further engine performance after the thruster was subjected to Orion crew module vibration loads which are higher than the engine had been previously tested. Vibration loads applied to the thruster produced energy levels that were three times the previously qualified levels, signifying the engine's robust design capability to withstand substantially higher vibration loads. The post-vibration altitude hot-fire test sequences mapped the thruster health over its full operating range ensuring that the engine meets its mission performance requirements after being subjected to Orion vibration loads during launch.
The hot-fire test program fully demonstrated the capability to reach at least 175 pounds of thrust during steady-state firing, thereby showing an Orion contingency operation during an abort mission. The firing sequences included 40 millisec. and 120 millisec. pulse mode tests as well as steady-state firings of five seconds and longer, to demonstrate engine performance health. The first firing sequence was a seven second steady-state firing at a feed pressure matching the maximum expected operating pressure (MEOP) with the thruster at ambient temperature to ensure the test sequence started at all possible firing conditions following an abort.
The testing met all objectives, providing additional confidence that Orion's crew module engine will meet all applicable performance requirements after being subjected to Orion abort vibration loads. "This recent testing helps close an identified risk and provides confidence that Aerojet's MR-104 design for Orion meets or exceeds the abort mission requirements," said Doug Cosens, Aerojet's Orion program director. "This effort also illustrates continued excellent cooperation among Aerojet, Lockheed Martin and NASA on the Orion project."
The current Orion crew module flight configuration includes 12 MR-104G engines operating at 160 pounds of thrust. The MR-104 engine family originally provided in-space propulsion for the Voyager 1 and 2 and Magellan missions, and subsequent MR-104 variants provided propulsion for Landsat and NOAA as well as other U.S. government programs.

Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company and teammate on the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) program, achieved a technological breakthrough by successfully completing full temperature range testing and validation to support a single rocket motor solution for all JAGM fixed-wing and rotary-wing platforms. The final completed tests were a series of cold temperature missile motor firings conducted in Camden, AR.
The rocket motor was manufactured to a tactical configuration using a composite motor case and conditioned to -65 degrees F, replicating the highly stressful thermal requirements of a fixed-wing launch at altitude. Building upon a series of previous developmental static motor tests at various temperatures, including a prior successful test at -65 degrees F in a heavywall motor case, this test further validates that the Aerojet rocket motor offers a single-motor solution for JAGM's challenging fixed-wing, rotary-wing and unmanned aerial vehicle requirements.

The JAGM TD program is being conducted by the U.S. Army's Joint Attack Munition Systems Project Office in Huntsville, AL, to replace the currently fielded HELLFIRE, Longbow, Airborne TOW and Maverick missiles for the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps. JAGM provides the next-generation air-to-ground missile for employment from the services' rotary-wing, fixed-wing and unmanned platforms.
Threshold aviation platforms include the U.S. Army's AH-64D Apache attack helicopter, the Army's Extended Range Multi-Purpose (ERMP) Sky Warrior unmanned aerial system, the U.S. Marine Corps' AH-1Z Super Cobra attack helicopter, and the U.S. Navy's MH-60R Seahawk armed reconnaissance helicopter and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet jet fighter. GenCorp Inc. (NYSE: GY) announced today that on March 26, 2010 Moody's Investors Service upgraded both its Corporate Family Rating (CFR) to B2 from B3 and Probability of Default ratings to B2 from Caa1. In addition, the senior secured credit facilities were upgraded to Ba2 from Ba3, as well as the convertible subordinated notes to Caa1 from Caa2. The 9 1/2% senior subordinated notes were confirmed at B1. Also, Moody's attached an outlook of "stable" to its credit rating of the Company.
Moody's noted in its research update announcing the upgrade, "The B2 CFR and stable rating outlook reflect GenCorp's improved financial position and greater flexibility and the Company's recent track record of stronger cash flow generation."
Moody's announcement follows a similar action taken by Standard & Poor's Ratings Services (S&P). On January, 22, 2010, S&P raised its ratings of GenCorp Inc. to B- from CCC+ and removed all ratings from CreditWatch. S&P attached an outlook of "stable" to its credit rating of the Company.
S&P noted in its research update announcing the upgrade, "The rating actions follow the Company's repayment of $125 million of debt that was tendered to it, with proceeds from the $200 million in convertible subordinated debentures it issued in late December 2009."

Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, and the U.S. Air Force conducted a successful static test of Aerojet's Advanced Third Stage (A3S) technology demonstration motor in support of the U.S. Family of Motors for military and commercial applications.
The A3S motor is being developed on the Propulsion Application Program (PAP) under contract to the 526th ICBM Systems Group at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. The test was conducted at altitude conditions by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.
Aerojet's A3S technology demonstration motor design incorporates numerous advanced technologies and materials selected in Phase I of the program and are being demonstrated via a Super BATES motor test in the initial portion of Phase II. The program's primary goal is to develop a new generation of ICBM-sized motors with increased propulsion performance and lower manufacturing and operational costs. In order to meet these goals, the A3S technology demonstration motor consists of an advanced carbon-carbon exit cone assembled using environmentally friendly materials and a high energy solid propellant that was mixed and cast at Aerojet's Sacramento, Calif. facility.
During the static firing, the A3S technology demonstration motor achieved a peak thrust of more than 33,000 lbf. Initial post-test inspection indicates that all components functioned as designed and performance predictions were on target. The Air Force and Aerojet are now preparing for development of a full-scale A3S motor for testing in a simulated altitude static test. This altitude test will fully validate motor performance and will be a precursor for potential flight testing.

GenCorp Inc. (NYSE: GY) announced today that it executed an amendment to its $280.0 million senior credit facility. The amendment, among other things, (i) permits the Company to repurchase or refinance its outstanding convertible subordinated notes and senior subordinated notes, subject to certain conditions; (ii) permits the Company to incur additional senior unsecured or subordinated indebtedness, subject to specified limits and other conditions; (iii) provides more flexible terms surrounding the leverage ratio compliance; and (iv) permits the Company to conduct a rescission offer, using stock and/or cash up to $15.0 million, with respect to certain units issued under the GenCorp Retirement Savings Plan.
The amendment reduces the revolving credit facility capacity from $80.0 million to $65.0 million and the letter of credit subfacility capacity from $125.0 million to $100.0 million. In addition, the interest rate on LIBOR rate borrowings is LIBOR plus 325 basis points, an increase of 100 basis points, and the letter of credit subfacility commitment fee has been similarly amended.
On March 18, 2010, the Company also entered into an agreement with certain holders to repurchase $22.5 million principal amount of its 9 1/2% senior subordinated notes at 102% of par, plus accrued and unpaid interest, and $14.3 million principal amount of its 2 1/4% convertible subordinated debentures at 93% of par, plus accrued and unpaid interest. The Company anticipates that it will retire the repurchased securities. The Company repurchased the debt using a portion of the net proceeds of its 4 1/16% convertible subordinated debentures issued in December 2009.

Aerojet, a GenCorp (NYSE: GY) company, and Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB), along with Aerojet's Russian partner, SNTK, announced today that a series of NK-33 rocket engine tests conducted in Samara, Russia were successfully completed in support of the development of Orbital's Taurus® II space launch vehicle.
The purpose of the extended-time testing of the NK-33 engine, on which the AJ26 first-stage engine for the Taurus II rocket is based, was to demonstrate a 'hot-fire' duration equal to two times a normal Taurus II acceptance testing and launch profile duty cycle. Over the last two weeks, three tests were conducted by SNTK with a cumulative duration of more than 600 seconds. These tests verified the significant technical margins on engine performance and durability required by Orbital's Taurus II development program.

Aerojet is the provider of the AJ26/NK-33 rocket engine for the first stage of the Taurus II launcher. The basic NK-33 engine was originally designed and produced in Russia for the Russian N1 lunar launch vehicle. Aerojet subsequently purchased approximately 40 of the basic NK-33 engines in the mid-1990s and, under contract with Orbital, the company is currently modifying the engines specifically for the Taurus II launch vehicle.
Aerojet and Orbital are scheduled to begin ground testing of the AJ26 engine at NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi in less than two months. The U.S.-based testing will validate the Taurus II specific engine configuration and continue to build on the extensive engine database that includes more than 17 years of development testing, encompassing approximately 1,500 engine-level tests totaling 194,000 seconds of firing duration. After the design verification tests are completed at Stennis, regular production acceptance testing will be initiated, paving the way to the first flights of the Taurus II rocket in 2011.
Aerojet Supports Launch and Orbital Placement of GOES-P

Aerojet, a GenCorp company, played a key role in the successful launch of United Launch Alliance's (ULA) Delta IV rocket from Cape Canaveral, Fla., carrying the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites-P (GOES-P) satellite built by The Boeing Company for this NASA and NOAA cooperative mission. Aerojet provided reaction control thrusters for the Delta IV upper stage, as well as a bipropellant chemical propulsion engine for the GOES-P satellite.
Twelve Aerojet MR-106 5-lbf thrust class monopropellant thrusters on the Delta IV upper stage provided roll, pitch and yaw control as well as settling burns for the upper stage main engine. Aerojet also provided the GOES-P satellite with a 100 lbf bipropellant apogee engine that will be used for circularizing the satellite's orbit after the Delta IV places it into an elliptical transfer orbit.
The primary mission of the GOES-P satellite is the real-time relay of environmental and meteorological data, which will allow for improved severe storm prediction capabilities. The Earth-observing satellite will also provide an Earth-monitoring capability that may be used to assist with "search and rescue" operations.
