For decades, mobile networks have been designed to deliver communications and facilitate connection. Their next challenge is to understand the physical world through which that information moves. Integrated sensing and communications, or ISAC, is emerging as one of the defining capabilities of 6G. It allows networks to sense the environment around which communications are delivered. By analyzing how radio signals reflect or change as they interact with objects, a network can determine presence, movement, distance, direction, and other characteristics – even for objects not connected to the network, allows networks to sense the environment around which communications are delivered. Carmakers and other industrial stakeholders are also examining sensing business models without waiting for 6G, while companies operating satellite and fiber-sensing systems are considering how their existing services could interact with terrestrial communications networks enhanced with sensing capability.

An important priority of 5G-Advanced has been establishing the ability to integrate sensing from various sources into the 5G network. The future of truly integrated sensing infrastructure is being developed for early 6G standards, today.

The Power of Integration
The most consequential outcome of our sensing research may not be a single sensing application, but instead a collaborative sensing platform through which many sensing systems can contribute trusted, interoperable, context-rich information to diverse services and applications.

For example, synthetic aperture radar satellites can observe large geographic areas and operate day or night, including through cloud cover, but their resolution, revisit time, and suitability vary by task. Fiber-optic sensing can turn existing cables into long, distributed sensors for vibration, strain, seismic activity, and infrastructure monitoring. The U.S. Geological Survey, for example, has demonstrated distributed acoustic sensing using telecommunications fiber for real-time earthquake detection. Vehicles already carry cameras, radar, LiDAR, and proximity sensors that provide essential local awareness, but their range and performance can be constrained by obstruction, weather, or line of sight. Wide-area network sensing could eventually provide an additional layer of information about conditions beyond the immediate reach of the vehicle. It would supplement rather than replace onboard sensing, particularly for safety-critical functions.

It’s important to remember that sensing technologies are not competing, but instead observing the world at different scales, positions, and under different conditions. While fiber running along a bridge may detect small deformations or patterns of traffic, RF sensing from surrounding infrastructure could provide coverage where fiber is absent, or add another observation to improve confidence. The same logic can extend to environmental, industrial, and other sites in which no individual sensing system provides a complete picture.

Sensing has exciting potential for our intelligent 6G future. By integrating various sensing modalities, operators and service providers can generate richer, continuously updated data about network conditions and the physical world. This data becomes incredibly valuable for AI-driven networks that will depend on AI models and agents to optimize performance, anticipate demand, automate operations, and deliver context-aware services. More importantly, the integration of diverse sensing modalities helps close the gap between digital decisions and physical outcomes.

its really hard to get transparency at this stage , it is a request by idcc for disney to have some skin in the game, with germany alone having 5mil disney subscribers this $118 million for 5 years and 11 countries of infringement is a pittance, if the article is written correctly...there was a decision in one of the venues about the % that could apply to the streaming side of the SEP and it was much much higher then this sum..if these subscribers are paying $5/month extra for disney + which largely pertains to the efficient coloring broadcast and faster streaming disney really needs to negotiate a settlement...the UPC court in europe are coming around to standardize frand cases there needs to be a standard decision on who is a willing license and a penalty applied for an unwilling licensor....interesting elements coming our way over the next 18 months

Disney+ subscribers in parts of Europe are paying for a premium tier that no longer delivers one of its headline features, and the reason is a patent case.

InterDigital Inc., a technology and patent licensing company, is seeking €101.7 million, roughly $118 million, from Walt Disney Co. over what it says is unlicensed use of video technology by Disney+.
The claim was filed with the Munich Regional Court earlier this month, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity because the size of the claim has not been made public.

What subscribers actually lost
After the Munich court granted an injunction in November 2025, Disney stopped offering Dolby Vision content to affected subscribers.
Dolby Vision was part of Disney+’s Premium subscription tier, which costs €5 more per month than the Standard plan. Premium’s pitch rests on picture and sound quality. One of those pillars came out.
Casting has also been affected. “Following a recent ruling in a European patent court, casting from a mobile device or browser via Chromecast is currently unavailable for Disney+ customers in Germany and the Netherlands,” Disney said in response to a request for comment.
What the patent actually covers
The dispute centers on HDR, or high-dynamic-range video.
HDR widens the range of brightness and color a display can show, preserving detail in both very dark and very bright parts of an image. It is one of the main technical reasons a premium streaming tier looks better than a standard one.
The Munich court ruled in November 2025 that Disney infringed an InterDigital patent covering streaming video using HDR, and granted an injunction stopping Disney from using it.
How they arrived at $118 million
The claim spans Disney’s use of the HDR technology from the launch of Disney+ in Germany in 2020 through the Munich injunction in late 2025.
It also accounts for streams delivered to subscribers across 19 European countries from a server facility near Frankfurt, which considerably widens the scope beyond German subscribers alone.
InterDigital says it would rather settle
Josh Schmidt, InterDigital’s chief legal officer, framed the claim as a fraction of what the company believes it is owed.
“This damages claim reflects just some of the value that Disney derives from our HDR technology,” Schmidt said in a statement to Bloomberg. “Our preference is to reach a negotiated settlement with Disney.”
Schmidt also criticized Disney’s response, saying the company has reduced features offered to customers rather than take a license, despite eight injunctions InterDigital says it has obtained across the broader litigation.
Bloomberg reported it is unclear whether any settlement would approach the figure InterDigital is seeking, and that Disney is likely to push back on the demand.
The dispute spans three continents
InterDigital says it has won injunctions against Disney in Germany and Brazil, along with rulings from the Unified Patent Court through its Mannheim and Düsseldorf divisions.
Both companies have also filed suits in California and Delaware.
InterDigital’s position is that Disney continues using some of its patented technologies without a license. Disney has not publicly addressed the claim beyond its statement about Chromecast availability.
Why this matters beyond Europe
Disney has spent 2026 positioning Disney+ as what its executives call a comprehensive membership ecosystem, adding TikTok creator content, expanding ABC News programming, and exploring a free ad-supported tier. All of that assumes the core product keeps improving.
Nothing in the current litigation impacts United States subscribers, and Disney has announced no changes to Disney+ in the US. The California and Delaware cases remain open.
