Harvard reveals $2.2 billion SpaceX holding worth more than half its U.S. equity portfolio

NASDAQ:SPCX

Harvard Management Co. has disclosed a $2.2 billion investment in SpaceX, making the rocket and satellite company by far the largest position in the university endowment’s reported U.S. equity portfolio as of June 30, 2026.

According to Harvard’s 13F filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the investment comprises approximately 12.94 million SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) shares. The holding represents more than half of Harvard Management Co.’s $4.26 billion disclosed U.S. stock portfolio.

SpaceX IPO leaves early investors sitting on substantial gains

SpaceX made its public-market debut on June 12, 2026, pricing shares at $135 in a record IPO that raised $85.7 billion.

The stock closed at $140 on August 14, around 3.7% above its offering price and giving SpaceX a market capitalisation of approximately $1.85 trillion.

That means institutional investors that held shares before or at the IPO are sitting on paper gains relative to the offering price, although Harvard’s original cost basis has not been disclosed.

University endowments emerge among major SpaceX investors

Harvard is one of several large institutional investors to disclose sizeable SpaceX positions following the company’s listing.

Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest bank, reported ownership of almost 5.66 million SpaceX shares valued at approximately $966 million as of June 30. The investment accounted for around 33% of the bank’s $2.92 billion aggregate U.S. equity portfolio.

The University of California’s investment arm also disclosed a position valued at approximately $1 billion, while the University of North Carolina and Washington University in St. Louis appeared among the company’s institutional shareholders.

The concentration partly reflects how long-standing private investments can suddenly become prominent within 13F disclosures once a company goes public and the shares become reportable.

Harvard’s SpaceX investment alone represents more than 50% of its disclosed U.S. equity holdings, although university endowments typically maintain much broader portfolios encompassing alternative investments and other assets not reflected in these filings.

Harvard Management Co. spokesman Patrick McKiernan declined to comment on individual investments.

Alphabet remains SpaceX’s dominant institutional shareholder

Among institutional investors, Alphabet holds a substantially larger SpaceX position than other disclosed shareholders.

Alphabet reported approximately 551.2 million SpaceX shares worth around $94 billion as of June 30. The holding represents a more-than-100-fold increase in value compared with the $900 million investment Alphabet made in the company in 2015.

The scale of the position illustrates the enormous gains generated for some of SpaceX’s earliest financial backers following its move into the public markets.

Musk retains control despite growing institutional ownership

Elon Musk remained SpaceX’s dominant shareholder following the IPO.

A regulatory filing showed that Musk held a 48.4% economic interest as of June 30, equivalent to approximately 6.42 billion shares, while controlling more than 82% of the company’s voting power.

At current market prices, the stake is valued at more than $900 billion, leaving Musk firmly in control of SpaceX even as institutional investors build significant holdings.

Filings leave uncertainty over when institutions acquired shares

One challenge for investors examining the latest regulatory disclosures is determining whether reported holdings were accumulated before the IPO or purchased as part of, or following, the public offering.

“It’s very, very difficult to tease out which of these institutions were holding pre-IPO shares,” Interactive Brokers market strategist Steve Sosnick told Reuters on August 14.

The distinction is important because some positions could reflect distributions of previously held venture investments, while others may represent fresh institutional purchases made around the IPO.

Investors await post-IPO ownership changes

The deadline for second-quarter 2026 13F filings passed on August 14, 45 days after the June 30 quarter-end, bringing most major institutional SpaceX ownership disclosures into the public domain.

However, the filings only provide a snapshot as of June 30 and therefore do not reveal whether Harvard, the University of California, Intesa Sanpaolo or other investors have subsequently increased or reduced their holdings.

Further changes could emerge as additional post-IPO lock-up periods expire in the coming months, potentially allowing more early investors to sell shares and creating another wave of regulatory disclosures around SpaceX’s shareholder base.

Watts, here is what I think.......I might be wrong, but kinda doubt it!!..........two reasons for a pullback, 1. trending above resistance, would needs a big big move to overcome this, imo........2. above upper bollinger band, usually only 3-5 days above it before a pullback.........again, news from Homeoffice of substance will provide a move north

At this point, since we have lost a lot of momentum, IMHO, we should have a few days of healthy pullback. Watt say you, Mikey?

Morgan Stanley Reiterates $300 SpaceX Target, Citing Growth-Adjusted Valuation SpaceX (NASDAQ:SPCX) trades at a discount to other large-cap AI-related companies when its expected growth is taken into account, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, who reiterated an Overweight rating and $300 price target on the stock. Jonas described SpaceX as “cheap and getting cheaper” on a growth-adjusted basis, despite the shares trading at a higher headline valuation multiple than a group of mega-cap AI-related companies. According to the analyst, SpaceX trades at approximately 30 times estimated 2028 enterprise value to EBIT, compared with around 16 times for other mega-cap AI enablers. However, Jonas calculated that SpaceX trades at approximately 0.3 times 2028 EV/EBIT/Growth, around 40% below the 0.5 times median for the comparison group. At Morgan Stanley’s $300 price target, Jonas estimates the ratio would increase to approximately 0.6 times, which he said would be in line with Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and below Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Meta (NASDAQ:META). Morgan Stanley Notes Limited Investor Ownership Jonas said investor interest in SpaceX shares has recently been limited. Referring to a meeting with 40 clients last week, he said “not a single hand went up” when he asked who owned the stock, adding that “it’s been really, really quiet on SPCX lately.” The analyst said concerns including Grok’s performance relative to other frontier AI models and spectrum availability for Starlink Mobile are reflected in the current valuation. Jonas described valuing SpaceX as “more of an ’and’ problem than an ’or’ problem,” referring to the need to consider the company’s interconnected businesses together. At a share price of $159, Jonas estimated that the market is assigning most or all of the $127-per-share value he attributes to SpaceX’s Space and Connectivity operations, leaving approximately $32 per share attributable to AI. He said that implied valuation is equivalent to approximately three times estimated 2028 enterprise value to sales for a neocloud-type business. According to Jonas, a decline in the shares to $100 within 12 months would require a clear slowdown in AI development, a significant setback in Starship testing or a material dilutive event. Compute Pricing Could Affect Revenue Estimates Jonas identified compute pricing as an important variable in SpaceX’s valuation. Consensus estimates assume pricing of $17.60 per watt across 4.1 gigawatts of capacity. On those assumptions, Jonas calculated that every additional $10 per watt would add more than $40 billion in revenue. He said SpaceX’s recent short-term neocloud contracts have been priced at between $30 and $50 per watt. The analyst identified several upcoming events that could affect investor expectations, including Starship Flight 15 in late October or early November. Jonas said a successful ship catch “could be the biggest positive catalyst since the IPO.” Other events cited by Jonas include third-quarter earnings in late October, Starship Flight 16 before the end of the year, planned Grok 4.8, 4.9 and 5.0 releases and potential additional neocloud agreements. Morgan Stanley identified risks including slower progress on Starship reusability, lower enterprise AI monetisation, higher compute costs per watt, longer time-to-power requirements, additional funding needs and regulatory delays. 2T Market cap does not represent current revenues.

2T represents the revenue and business volume that SpaceX will have in the future.

So, what will happen to the stock price when we are in the future?

They won't come up because already went up before things happened?
