As for the correlation - this is why there is so much talk about SARS. Currently the deaths have been exceeding 5% but there have been no deaths in the US thankfully (under 60 cases). Getting the proper health care is important and in some countries that is problematic. As SARS is new that's all we can do is speculate and that speculation came from a CDC spokesperson. She stated that the mortality rate would be much higher than influenza, which kills about 20-30K per year in the US alone (elderly).

Now do I think SARS will kill that many in the US? - No I don't because of the concerted effort as combating SARS that seems to be working.
