No, neither the government, nor the department stores (nor anything else) are "necessary" for my celebration of Christmas, the birth of my Lord and Savior -- that is not the point. What is wrong with acknowledging that the holiday we are celebrating is Christmas, and Christmas has a meaning?? Those who choose to not participate are free to do so, but they do not have a right to infringe on the vast majority which wants to celebrate Christmas rather than the "winter holidays".
