There have been 3 splits since that time you speak of in 1997 which are applied retroactively to charts so that investors can see a directly comparative value.

Those splits were 2 for 1, 3 for 1, and 2 for 1. This means that the prices shown prior to the first split (which is where your May 1997 falls) are 12 times lower than what the actual trading price was (2x3x2). That means the chart showing $1.50 today for that time period would mean it was trading at approximately $18.00 at that time.

Splits can make things very confusing, but they are right, it was never trading at $1.50.
