The St. Regis Mohawks tribe is trying to push New York Governor George Pataki to sign a deal that will allow them to build a casino at Monticello Raceway in the southern Catskills region. Originally, the tribe wanted to build the casino at the Kutsher's resort, which is also located in Monticello.
After the September 11 attacks, Pataki and the Legislature agreed to more casinos in new York. Lawmakers decided to allow three Native American-run casinos in western New York as well as three in the Catskills region. Only two western New York casinos have been built. The delay is due to clashes between casino proposals and Indian land-claim lawsuits.
The Mowhaks have changed the location of the casino site and development partners many times. Pataki informed the tribe that he still wants clarification on the environmental impact the casino will have and the timeline for the project.
