What does it take to short an APS pick? Can only the big guys do it? Or can common people like me also do it?

To take a reasonably large short position, you'll need a lot of money in your account. Up to $2.50 a share. Margin and maintenance are expensive. You'll also need to find a brokerage willing to let you take the risk. That's not easy.

You could check out Interactive Brokers. They'll let you short, but as noted it'll cost you.
