OK.... so paying someone for their little black book can be smart. That being said, if that person is an idiot, you don't want to pay them for the little black book AND for them to make company decisions. Pay for the little black book and put him in a corner somewhere where he can't hurt anything.... and only pay him what he is worth. No more.... no less.
I am not saying Jeremy is an idiot, but just an example.
