Sprint loss shrinks; response to iPhone strong

(7:32 AM ET) TEL AVIV (MarketWatch) -- Sprint Nextel Corp.,the Overland Park, Kan., telecom-services provider, narrowed its third-quarter net loss on 2.2% higher revenue. The loss was $301 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with $911 million, or 30 cents, in the year-earlier period. Revenue reached $8.33 billion from $8.15 billion. A survey of analysts by FactSet Research produced a consensus estimate of a loss of 22 cents a share on $8.38 billion of revenue. Sprint added a net 1.3 million wireless subscribers in the quarter, including 304,000 postpaid subscribers to the Sprint brand. The company launched Apple Inc.'siPhone 4S and iPhone 4 after the quarter ended, on Oct. 14. "The response to this device by current and new customers has surpassed initial expectations," the company said in a Wednesday statement.
