Beamer,

And do you know how expensive a standard Android smartphone is, when it hasn't been subsidized heavily by the phone carriers?

Man, it's expensive even AFTER that subsidy.

I'm considering the Droid Bionic, but that baby is $300 if I sign a two-year agreement with Verizon. After that, I'll be paying Verizon $70/month, and that's the minimum. If I go over 2GB a month (which I plan to with the 4G LTE services), it'll cost even more.

That's $1,680 in guaranteed revenue for Verizon. Not too shabby ... for them.

And I don't know about you, but I sure won't be running MSWord on that smartphone. Maybe FPG will, LOL ...

And do you know how expensive a standard Android smartphone is, when it hasn't been subsidized heavily by the phone carriers? Just looking at Verizon's website, I get the following for full retail price (without 2 year contract renewal discount):

- Samsung Droid Charge: $569.99
- Motorola Droid Bionic: $589.99
- LG Revolution: $559.99

Get the idea? That's how much it will cost to have an ARM based device with the same functionality as a phone, when you don't get a subsidized package with $100+ monthly service.

<rolls eyes>

I guess it would be impossible to make an ARM device with more power, a bigger screen, battery, etc. priced for less, then...

Oh wait, that's stupid, they already DO. Starting with the iPad2 and getting cheaper with the clones from there.

Phones have a premium cost because they pack all that power INTO A PHONE-SIZED DEVICE.

Duh... Relax the constraints and it can be made cheaper.

Some people think that the only legacy app a person needs is Angry Birds. I guess that works for "some" and fpg.
