I think they are further from production then expected by most here. Mathamaticly it wont take long but there are generations needed.
The numbers have been posted here many times but it is around 500k worms to make 1 ton of silk worth around $60k.(june 2011 price)
Monster silk will carry a premium but lets not worry about the unknown extras.
Not sure what anyone considers "production quantity" But lets just say we want $10 million a year.
$10m / $60k per ton = 167 tons needed
167 x 500k worms =83,500,000 worms a year. 6,958,333 a month
Since a silkworm has approx 30 day cycle till harvest we would need to harvest 7 million worms a month.
Since they lay approx 300 eggs each we need 25,000 pairs to make the eggs for 1 month.
If we started with 1 hatching of worms(300)and 50% lay eggs we would have 45000 eggs in about 45 days. When they breed we would have our first 13 million worms. About day 75 from the first hatching.
At this point we would need a lab with quite a bit of space. 13 million worms eating their body weight a day in leaves will take some space. If they avreage 1/4 oz it is approx. 20,000 pounds of mulberry a day at the end of the larval cycle!
I would think somewhere around 90-120 days after production started we would be able to supply $10 mil a year in NORMAL silk. Add what you want for the "monster" added in.
Since at the end of May Kim said in the CC they were looking at 3 labs. I would say picking one was not very far off. If we gave him 60 days to get the lab and set it up then we started breeding at the end of july. Given the above time frame we would be set for production in october or november.
Please understand this allows for no set backs and no delays. It is 100% speculation and all IMO
