Data; What started today's comments, was the posting of an IDCC presentation titled “ Addressing Unique M2M Challenges with Converged Gateways”.

In their latest quarterly report, Sierra Wireless states that their M2m business includes:

AirPrime™ Intelligent Embedded Modules (excluding sales to PC OEMs),

AirLink™ Intelligent Gateways and Routers

AirVantage™ Services Platform and Solutions. (This covers providing solutions and services that enable system integrators, enterprises and telecom operators to accelerate the deployment of complete M2M solutions for managing remote equipment and assets. )


Sierra Wireless’ total M2M revenue in the second quarter of 2010 was $83.6 million. The breakdown of this was:

AirPrime™ Intelligent M2M Embedded Modules - $69.5 millio

AirLink™ Intelligent Gateways and Routers - $12.2 million

AirVantage™ Services Platform and Solutions- $1.9 million

Since M2M apparently is one of your specialized areas of interest, my question is that since the announcements concerning IDCC’s license with Sierra Wireless (and also Cinterion) refer to M2M modules, not gateways/routers, are the gateways/routers excluded from royalty payments? Also, how or would IDCC collect on the “Converged Gateways” discussed in the presentation?
