I know the HTC Incredible had a "problem" where signal strength would drop to 1 bar for no apparent reason, but everything would remain perfectly functional without calls dropping or anything detrimental happening. Hope that's what's going on here.
Alternatively, this would (rather ironically) explain how Steve Jobs was unable to access certain networking features of the iPhone4 at the announcement. Blaming Bloggers for everything!
EDIT: Nevermind...
Apparently it's a hardware issue all the iPhone 4s share, and cannot be fixed with a software or firmware update.
The yellow spotting, on the other hand, is benign and goes away after a few days of use.
