JDS Uniphase Gets Clipped as Component Shortages Ease

RESEARCH IN MOTION (RIMM): C.E. Unterberg, Towbin upgraded this provider of easy-to-use wireless devices that permit real-time wireless access to data. The firm raised its rating to STRONG BUY from BUY on Dec. 21 after the company reported results for its fiscal third quarter that surpassed the firm's estimates. Revenue for the quarter ended Nov. 30 was $61.6 million, up 45% from the previous quarter and 20% higher than Unterberg Towbin's estimate of $51.1 million. The company earned $0.02 a share in the quarter compared to a loss of $0.02 in the previous quarter. Unterberg Towbin had forecast a loss of $0.03 a share for the quarter. The star performer in the quarter was RESEARCH IN MOTION's BlackBerry, a hand-held, wireless e-mail device that accounted for 59% of quarterly revenue. The company shipped 60,000 BlackBerry devices in the quarter and ended the period with 115,000 subscribers. Unterberg, Towbin had forecast shipments of 50,000 BlackBerrys and 95,000 subscribers at the end of the quarter.

In response to the strong results the firm increased its forecast for fiscal fourth-quarter revenue to $75.6 million from $63.4 million. Its revenue forecast for fiscal 2000, which ends in February 2001, was raised to $397.5 million from $360.6 million. Unterberg Towbin also increased its 12-month price target for RESEARCH IN MOTION to $120 from $100. The firm expects an "arsenal" of new products from RESEARCH IN MOTION over the next 12 months, and it believes that the expanded offerings "will drive penetration to new customers as well as new geographies and broaden its technologies to run on other networks and platforms." RESEARCH IN MOTION closed at $77.19 on Dec. 27.
