Re: People still use Parallel ports?

We have software from a couple of vendors that requires a license server that uses a hardware key. Such keys are now available as USB keys as well as parallel port keys, but our current keys are all parallel. We can always move the license server to some other machine, but it's one legacy use of parallel ports that will continue until we no longer need to use the software that has been keyed to that piece of hardware.

The software comes from these guys.

"do you have any links to A64 notebook sellers besides
HP and Emachines?"

There are several, but they are mainly aimed at the high end notebook market. The cheapest seems to be the HPaq ones. They also have a big advantage, the use nVidia through out. If you want to do Linux, nVidia has great support, ATI support is more lackluster.

mmoy, eMachines, what's wrong with their A64 low cost, widescreen laptop?

On parallel ports, we've been using them on our network for years. The (cheap) print server box has two parallel ports and they run the printers very efficiently.

I'd modify your point - who would put a printer directly on a PC when you can set up Ethernet and WiFi pretty easily for everyone to share them?

Dell uses the parallel port as the I/O connector for external bay devices (mainley the floppy drive) on many laptops. Admittedly the floppy drive is a non issue with USB keychain drives being so cheap and common but there is still a use for the parallel port. I think the newest Dell laptops moved to Mini-B USB connector for the external bay device.

We have some clients that still use printers with parallel
ports. Hopefully they will be retired when the next round
of upgrades occur. :)
