There may also be problems with IP (read, patents). It would appear that Sun, Cray and Serverworks would be in the best position to develop such systems as they have important IP in this area. I think AMD is best positioned to offer custom-crossbar-programmed Opterons to these other companies, rather than to do all the other legwork as well. After all, the software and marketing components of these systems are far outside AMD's current abilities.

BTW, SGI continues to wane away. At some point, possibly even now, their IP will become worth more than the company's market cap, although debt levels must be considered also. There was speculation on comp.arch (or was it comp.os.vms?) that an acquisition by Sun might make sense here, even though that would lead Sun down the Itanium pathway. FWIW, but WDIK?
