I would agree with that. I look at HSDPA as EVDV for WCDMA. I suppose licensing fees could differ on any HSDPA augmentation to WCDMA relative to EVDO on CDMA1x but in any case the base system is necessary.

The HSDPA extension of 3GSM WCDMA UMTS

<< Stepping around the initial Release '99 doesn't allow Cingular to wiggle out of royalties to QCOM, correct??? >>

Carriers don't pay royalties to Qualcomm, their OEM vendors do, but HSDPA is a Release 5 (and Release 6) extension of 3GSM WCDMA UMTS, and vendors will pay their negotiated WCDMA royalty to Qualcomm.

Meanwhile,a number of sources indicated that Cingular Wireless is intensely interested in the 3.5G technology, HSPDA, which promises data downlink speeds approaching 10Mpbs. The technology is compatible with the EDGE standard, currently being utilized by Cingular, AT&T Wireless and T-Mobile.

"I would not doubt Cingular tip-toes right past WCDMA Rel99 if they feel HSPDA will be available in a reasonable timeframe, say 06-07.

1st - HSDPA is NOT compatible with EDGE

2nd - read Eric's post

3rd - ignore Rob's post. HSDPA as a part of UMTS is licensed by Qualcomm. HSDPA will not be stand alone (but used in conjunction with FDD and TDD) and even still, Qualcomm has contributed to HSDPA.
